Job description

The Sheriff's Department is seeking skilled Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Trainees responsible for maintenance, repair, and modification of buildings, fixtures, and equipment within correctional facilities. Sheriff's Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Trainees work under training to acquire skills for promotion to the journey level (up to $34.40/hr).

Detention Differential: Employees in this classification assigned to work at a detention center shall receive an additional $1.50 per hour for hours worked at this facility.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  1. Background: Applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass a background check, including a polygraph. No felony convictions.
  2. Shift: The position requires availability for days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts, as facilities operate 24/7.
  3. Travel: A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Mileage reimbursement and proof of insurance are necessary.
  4. Physical: Incumbents must climb ladders, bend, stoop, twist, crawl in tight spaces, and lift heavy objects occasionally.
  5. Promotion: Trainees are eligible for promotion to Sheriff's Maintenance Mechanic ($25.01 - $34.40/hr) after successful training and probation, within 24 months.
  6. Sponsorship: San Bernardino County does not sponsor visas.

Must possess one of the following:

  • Two years of full-time experience maintaining large facilities in electrical, plumbing, HVAC trades.
  • Certification from an accredited trade school in electrical, plumbing, HVAC (must attach certificate).

Experience in institutional building maintenance, electrical wiring, plumbing, HVAC, and possession of Universal CFC or welding certification is desirable.
