Job description

The Sheriff's Communications Center is recruiting individuals for the position of Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatcher. We seek candidates capable of handling situations with command, sensitivity, and respect. The Communications Center provides high-quality public safety services to San Diego County residents.

Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatchers are trained to respond to 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch deputies, and make quick, accurate decisions to ensure safety.

The center is located in Kearny Mesa and operates 24/7, 365 days a year.

Dispatchers handle 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls, dispatch deputies via radio, and may be assigned to training or lead roles with premiums:

  • Training premium: $2.50/hour for training new staff in communication skills.
  • Lead dispatcher premium: 10% of base pay, but not combined with training premium.

This position qualifies for the Employee Referral Reward Program. If referred by a County employee, include their name on your application.

TO QUALIFY YOU MUST HAVE:

  • One year of full-time experience as a Public Safety Radio Dispatcher within the last three years, including use of CAD and 9-1-1 call handling, with completion of a radio training program, OR
  • Completion of the Sheriff's Dispatcher Program's Phones and Inquiry phases, plus 10 months as a Dispatcher Trainee.

Additional requirements:

  • Be 18+ years old.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • Pass a computer-based performance test.
  • No felony convictions (some misdemeanors may disqualify).
  • Willing to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends; night shift premium of $0.80/hour.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Candidates will undergo background checks and medical screening. Additional investigations may be conducted.
