Job summary

The Akron-Summit County Public Library's Fairlawn-Bath Branch is hiring a full-time Shelver who works 37.5 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, to support shelving and circulation tasks. You will sort and return materials, read shelves, move carts, assist at service desks, and perform light clerical duties while maintaining neat public areas.

A criminal background check is required for applicants 18+.

Qualifications

• Ability to arrange materials in alphabetical and numerical order.
• Skill in customer service.
• Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom as they apply to public libraries.
• Available to work between 8-20 hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays.
• Able to lift light objects (<25 pounds) and push library materials carts up to 200 pounds.
• Age and Schooling Certificate ("work permit") required for those under 18 years of age.
• Criminal background check required for those 18 years of age or older.

Responsibilities

• Sorts and returns library materials to their proper place on the shelves.
• Lifts, bends, and climbs as associated with shelving routines.
• Reads shelves for correctness of arrangement of materials.
• Shifts shelves where necessary.
• Moves Library material carts as needed.
• Checks for missing and/or damaged materials.
• Fills and routes holds.
• Searches shelves for specific materials as assigned.
• Performs simple clerical tasks, such as photocopying and labeling.
• Assists with opening and closing routines, as needed.
• Perform various tasks assigned by professional Library staff.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Fairlawn-Bath Branch Library seeks a full-time Shelver who works 37.5 hours per week (including evenings and weekends) and:

• Sorts and returns library materials to their proper place on the shelves.
• Lifts, bends, and climbs as associated with shelving routines.
• Reads shelves for correctness of arrangement of materials.
• Shifts shelves where necessary.
• Moves Library material carts as needed.
• Checks for missing and/or damaged materials.
• Fills and routes holds.
• Searches shelves for specific materials as assigned.
• Performs simple clerical tasks, such as photocopying and labeling.
• Assists with opening and closing routines, as needed.
• Performs various tasks assigned by professional Library staff.
• Maintains neatness in the public service areas.
• Works at the service desk during employee meal or break periods, as needed.
• Moves furniture and displays, as needed.
• Assists with packing and unpacking delivery crates and other circulation duties, as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to arrange materials in alphabetical and numerical order.
• Skill in customer service.
• Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom as they apply to public libraries.
• Available to work between 8-20 hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays.
• Able to frequently bend, stoop, and stand; to lift light objects (less than 25 pounds) and carry them short distances (50 feet or less); and to push Library materials carts up to 200 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Age and Schooling Certificate ("work permit") required for those under 18 years of age.
• Criminal background check required for those 18 years of age or older.
