Job summary

The City of Albuquerque is seeking a licensed veterinarian to provide humane veterinary, husbandry and spay/neuter care for animals in city shelters. The role includes supervising kennel staff, ensuring policy compliance and performing advanced medical procedures.

Responsibilities also cover anesthesia induction, surgical care, neonatal treatments, recordkeeping, and advising management on animal health and welfare. Weekend or night work may be required as part of a safety-sensitive role.

Qualifications

• Must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM) and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in New Mexico.
• Experience in the practice of veterinary medicine, public health or environmental health preferred.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, City Operator's Permit (COP) within six months, and a valid euthanasia technician license within six months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose animal sickness and injury; observe animals and perform surgeries or medical treatments as needed.
• Oversee staff and kennel operations; ensure compliance with policies and veterinary standards of care.
