Job summary

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a compassionate Shelter Veterinarian in Des Moines to join our veterinary medical team. You will provide care across wellness, illness, surgery, and complex cases to support animals in ARL's shelter system.

You will collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, foster staff, behavior teams, and other departments to make thoughtful medical decisions while balancing patient needs with shelter population needs.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited school.
• Active Iowa veterinary license or ability to obtain before employment.
• Strong medical judgment and commitment to high-quality patient care.
• Ability to make timely, thoughtful medical decisions in a fast-moving shelter environment.
• Excellent communication and collaboration with teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality medical care for animals in ARL custody and care.
• Perform physical exams, diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and prescribe medications.
• Perform spay/neuter and other surgeries as needed.
• Evaluate illnesses and injuries and manage population health initiatives.
• Collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, care teams, and foster/behavior staff.
