Job summary

The Humane Society of St. Lucie County in Port Saint Lucie, FL is seeking a compassionate veterinarian to lead shelter medicine with hands-on care and mentorship for staff. The role blends clinical duties with program leadership to improve animal welfare.

You will perform exams, preventive care, surgeries including spay/neuter, and coordinate with leadership to align protocols with best practices. This full-time position offers growth opportunities and a mission-driven environment.

  • Active Florida veterinary license and DEA license.
  • Professional liability insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily medical care including exams, diagnostics and treatment.
  • Lead and support veterinary technicians and assistants and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
  • Conduct regular population rounds and help manage herd health.
  • Develop and improve medical protocols aligned with shelter medicine best practices.
  • Provide top-notch surgical care including spay/neuter.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, occasional weekends and special events.
  • Ensure medical care and operations meet all regulatory and safety standards (DEA, OSHA, state guidelines).
  • Oversee and continuously improve shelter medical protocols and population health programs.
  • Conduct regular population rounds and monitor disease prevention, treatment and outbreak response
  • Manage medical inventory, controlled substances and the Emergency Medical Fund
  • Collaborate with leadership to guide animal care decisions and overall shelter outcomes
  • Support humane decision making, including euthanasia when necessary
  • Maintain clear, accurate medical records and ensure proper treatment plans are followed
  • Assist with cruelty case evaluations and documentation as needed
  • Lead, mentor and support veterinary and animal care staff
  • Promote safe, humane handling practices (Fear Free preferred)
  • Provide guidance on medical cases and day-to-day problem solving
  • Foster a positive, collaborative and respectful team culture
  • Partner with leadership on hiring, training and staff development
