Job summary

East Bay SPCA seeks a Shelter Manager in Oakland to lead the animal care team, supervise staff, and ensure efficient animal flow and intake. You will develop programs, coordinate training, and collaborate across departments to improve the shelter experience for clients and animals.

The role oversees budgets, staffing, and program implementation at the Oakland facility, with a focus on high-quality care, safety, and community outreach. Non‑profit experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Excellent team leadership abilities; typically demonstrated by at least three years of supervisory experience, including budgetary and staff supervision, preferably in a non‑profit or an animal welfare organization.
• Experience working in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic required.
• Proven organizational skills and effective written and verbal communication.
• Ability to think critically, multi‑task, and thrive in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment with a positive attitude.
• Multilingual fluency desired.

Responsibilities

• Develops, implements, and monitors shelter programs and practices to maintain and improve the standards of shelter animal care, evaluation, and flow.
• Oversee staff training, scheduling, performance management, and coaching for animal care staff at the Oakland facility.
• Coordinate intake, animal flow, and collaboration with Shelter Operations Director to ensure efficient operations.
• Assist with annual operating budgets for the Oakland shelter and monitor revenues and expenses.
• Collaborate with other departments and volunteers to expand community outreach and adoptions.
