Shelter Custodian
Job Classification:

Non-Exempt Rate: $19.00 p/hr + benefits
Shift: Mon-Fri 8a-4p

Position Overview

The Shelter Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the Oakland shelter sites. This role involves performing various cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for employees, clients, and visitors. The ideal candidate will be diligent, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently.

Key Responsibilities
General Cleaning:
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in all areas of the building.
  • Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors.
  • Refill restroom supplies, such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Empty and clean trash receptacles and recycling bins.
  • Efficiently manage work task lists with recurring daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.
Office Maintenance:
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen and breakroom areas.
  • Wipe down countertops, tables, and chairs.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch areas, such as door handles, light switches, and elevator buttons.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of glass surfaces, including windows and mirrors.
Specialized Cleaning:
  • Perform periodic deep cleaning tasks, such as carpet shampooing.
  • Respond to spills and other cleaning emergencies promptly.
  • Assist with setup and cleanup for special events and meetings.
Building Upkeep:
  • Ability to handle minor maintenance requests on your own, examples include clearing clogged toilets, changing batteries in smoke detectors and door locks, and lightbulbs.
  • Report any further maintenance issues or safety hazards to the Director of Facilities.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Connect with the Office Coordinator to order supplies as needed.
  • Ensure all cleaning equipment is properly maintained and in good working order.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and supplies in accordance with safety data sheets (SDS) and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Through a combination of experience and education, the Custodian will have:
  • Proven experience as a custodian, janitor, or in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, proper storage, and disposal methods.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment, such as vacuums, floor buffers, and carpet cleaners.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to travel to other sites to perform tasks as needed.

A high school diploma and a minimum of one year’s professional work experience in a related field is required. A technical training degree in a related field is preferred.

Position Physical Demands:

The Custodian will be called upon to engage in physical activity related to general maintenance, including the capacity to lift up to 50 lbs and stand or sit for extended periods. Also, the ability to walk up and down steps and physical activity related to special projects.
