Job summary

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is a progressive animal welfare shelter dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming homeless and abused animals in the Birmingham area.

The Animal Care Specialist will provide care to dogs, cats, and other animals at the shelter, performing cleaning, feeding, grooming, and daily welfare tasks within a busy open intake environment. The role requires weekend availability and reliable transportation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Reliable transportation to and from work is required; punctual attendance is essential.
• Experience with animals in veterinary, boarding, or shelter settings is preferred.
• Weekend work may be required.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work well in a team environment and maintain a positive attitude.

Responsibilities

• Performs cleaning and sanitizing as directed by supervisor and standards.
• Feeds, cleans, and exercises animals including walking, bathing, and monitoring behavior.
• Assists with loading/unloading animals with transport driver.
• Maintains clean and stocked animal areas, crates, and equipment.
• Documents behavior observations and reports to the manager; reports medical observations to clinic staff.
• Adheres to GBHS policies and participates in staff meetings.
