Job summary

Hutco, Inc. is currently seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Worker for shipbuilding work in Newport News, Virginia.

The role involves installation and fabrication of sheet metal components for shipboard foundations, ventilation systems, bulkheads, and furniture, with marine experience preferred. Responsibilities include reading blueprints, laying out and fabricating per drawings, operating rivet guns, grinders, drills, and shears, and maintaining safety standards in an active shipyard

Qualifications

• Experience in sheet metal fabrication, preferably in shipyards or marine environments.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and sketches.
• Comfort working in physically demanding, industrial shipyard settings.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, sketches, weld symbols, material requirements, and datum/reference lines.
• Lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install sheet metal components to required specifications.
• Install and support shipboard foundations, ventilation components, bulkheads, furniture, and related assemblies.
• Operate rivet guns, grinders, drills, and power tools in a shipyard environment.
• Follow safety requirements and PPE standards in active shipbuilding operations.

Job Location: Newport News, VA
Hutco Branch: Portsmouth
Rate of Pay:$32.00 per hour, plus per diem for those who qualify

Shift: Variable, 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM, Sunday - Saturday

DESCRIPTION

Hutco, Inc. is currently seeking experienced Sheet Metal Workers for shipbuilding work in Newport News, Virginia.

This position involves installation and fabrication work supporting shipboard foundations, ventilation systems, bulkheads, furniture, and related sheet metal assemblies. Marine experience is preferred; however, relevant aircraft, industrial, or commercial sheet metal experience may also be considered.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Read and interpret complex ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, sketches, weld symbols, material requirements, and datum/reference lines.
• Measure and interpret fractional and decimal dimensions using rulers and standard measuring tools.
• Lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install sheet metal components to required specifications.
• Install and support shipboard foundations, ventilation components, bulkheads, furniture, and related assemblies.
• Operate hand and power tools including electric drills, grinders, and rivet guns.
• Operate shop equipment including drill presses, press brakes, and shears.
• Perform fabrication and assembly work in physically demanding industrial and shipyard environments.
• Follow Newport News Shipbuilding safety requirements, PPE standards, and applicable OSHA regulations.
• Maintain productivity and quality while working around active shipbuilding operations.

PREFERRED / ADDITIONAL SKILLS

• Rigger or material-handling experience.
• Experience operating mobile equipment such as JLGs and scissor lifts.
• Previous marine or shipyard sheet metal experience.

PHYSICAL / WORKING CONDITIONS

• Must be able to perform physically demanding work.
• Must be comfortable working in varying temperature and humidity conditions.
• Must be able to comply with all required PPE and safe-work practices.
• Must be capable of working in an active industrial and shipbuilding environment.
