Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA, is seeking a Sheet Metal Worker. You will be qualified through the shipyard's welding school and join a versatile team fabricating, assembling and installing components on aircraft carriers, submarines and surface ships.

The role requires the ability to lift 40 pounds, pass background checks, and perform physically demanding tasks in all weather. A Sheet Metal related cert/diploma is preferred and training includes basic sheet metal/tack welding.

Qualifications

• Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
• Must be able to pass physical agility test.
• Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
• Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
• Must be able to perform overhead work.
• Must be able to work at extreme heights.
• Must be able to perform work outdoors, year-round, in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to work in small, tight, confined spaces.
• Must be willing to work in radiation areas, with appropriate training and equipment.
• Must be able to be clean shaven to wear a respirator.
• Must be able to work overtime as needed.
• Must be willing to work any shift.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal components on Aircraft Carriers, Submarines and surface ships.
• Work governed by detailed technical work documents and procedural guidelines.
• Utilize hand tools and power tools such as drills, rivet guns, grinders, and saws.
• Receive formal and on-the-job training in sheet metal/tack welding.
