Job description

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (TITLE 32), Position Description Number NGD1371000, and is part of the TN 164th AW Air National Guard.

This vacancy is covered by the Association of Civilian Technicians (ACT), Chapter 115 (Pyramid on the River Chapter).

Duties

As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) WG-3806-10 (TITLE 32), you will:

  1. Independently inspect aircraft and determine the nature and extent of repairs using technical orders as guidelines.
  2. Repair cracks in aircraft skin, fabricate and fit patches, and determine repair details to restore strength.
  3. Troubleshoot structural repair issues in fuselage, tails, wings, cowlings, and stabilizers.
  4. Align and balance components and airframes with precision measuring instruments.
  5. Inspect for damage or deterioration and repair or replace plastic, fiberglass, composites, bonded structures, and honeycomb assemblies.
  6. Fabricate and test metal tubing, conduits, and cables according to drawings and specifications.
  7. Perform fabrication of locally manufactured items for aircraft and equipment.
  8. Operate power tools such as shears, brakes, rolls, dimpling machines, drill presses, and other metalworking tools.
  9. Prepare layouts, dies, jigs, and templates for fabrication, repair, or modification tasks.
  10. Identify corrosion and perform testing to determine its type using magnifying equipment and chemical/mechanical methods.
  11. Remove corrosion mechanically and chemically, using tools like sanders, buffers, brushes, bead blasters, and chemical agents.
  12. Apply protective coatings, markings, and decals after corrosion removal.
  13. Manage hazardous materials in accordance with directives.
  14. May operate wash rack equipment.
  15. Assist in training guard members and maintaining technical publication files.
  16. Participate in readiness evaluations and support exercises.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • National Guard membership is required; contact a recruiter if unsure of eligibility.
  • Must be a member of a compatible military assignment prior to employment.
  • Must wear the military uniform.
  • Applicants not in the Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must register for Selective Service.
  • Must pass a background investigation for suitability.
  • May need to complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Must obtain and maintain security clearance.
  • Cannot have a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Irregular or overtime hours may be required.
  • Must be aware of environmental responsibilities and comply with related regulations.
  • Must undergo medical testing to ensure fitness for employment.
Qualifications

Military Grades: E-1 through E-6

Compatible Military Assignments: 2AXXX

General Experience: Experience or training in planning, manufacturing, and installing cylindrical, square, or rectangular objects with standard fastenings.

Specialized Experience: At least 18 months of experience in planning, layout, and construction of items with complex seams and using advanced tools and materials like stainless steel, copper, magnesium, and honeycomb materials. Demonstrated ability to perform complex mathematical calculations and measurements.
