Job summary

City of LaGrange seeks a Sewer Service Worker Trainee to learn wastewater system operations. You will help televise lines, clean with Jet/Vac equipment, and assist with maintenance of the collection system.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, ability to lift 50 pounds, willingness to work outdoors in various weather, and on-call/overtime availability. Training toward Class A endorsements is provided.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain Class A with tanker and air brake endorsements within one year.
  • Available for 24 hour on call and overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Setup and televise sewer systems to department standards.
  • Use Jet/Vac equipment to clean and maintain lines.
  • Install taps and repair sewer mains.
  • Inspect sewer and manholes for issues.
  • Assist in maintenance of equipment and systems.
  • Assist with flow meter installation and watershed protection tasks.

Sewer Service Worker Trainee

NOTICE OF JOB OPENING

DATE: AUGUST 20, 2026

DEPARTMENT: SEWER

PAY: MIN $17.95 MAX $26.27
Pay range is based on trainee position and can be higher based on qualifications.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

Employees in this position are responsible for learning the operation of the wastewater system to include all aspects listed in the essential job functions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Setup and utilize equipment to televise sewer system, both new and existing to ensure compliance with department standards.
  • Utilize Jet/Vac equipment to clean and maintain lines.
  • Install new and replacement taps and installs and repair sewer mains.
  • Help inspect sanitary sewer, collection system, and manholes for offset joints, bad inverts, missing steps etc.
  • Assist in corrective and preventative maintenance of equipment and collection system.
  • Assist with flow meter installation, illicit discharge detection, stream walking, monitoring and various watershed protection functions.

Qualifications:

  • One year experience in related construction field; or any combination of experience, education and training which provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to obtain Class A with tanker and air brake endorsements within one year.
  • Must be available for 24 hour on call and overtime.
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to work outside in inclement weather and conditions.
  • High School Diploma or GED

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Skill in the use of small power tools, hand tools, and a soldering gun.
  • Ability to learn the methods and techniques of sewer operations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and with other employees.
  • Ability to work outside under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn safety practices.
  • Skill in the use of a wide variety of hand, plumbing and electrical tools.
  • Ability to read and comprehend at the level for the job.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.Ability to exercise judgement.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Work Environment:

The employee will be exposed to the following conditions in the work environment: hot or cold indoor work environment; dirt, dust, grease, machinery and its moving parts; work in high, precarious places; raw sewage; outdoor weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The work is often performed on rough ground and slippery surfaces in and around wastewater. Protective devices such as masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, goggles, gloves, hearing protectors, helmets, and other protective equipment or clothing is often required. The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate to loud.
