About the Sewer Maintenance Division:

Sewer Maintenance ensures the safe and efficient transport of wastewater through over 2,000 miles of collection mains and 60+ lift stations for processing at five treatment plants. The inspection, cleaning, and repair of the wastewater collection system are paramount in maintaining Wichita’s critical infrastructure.

Role Description:

Manual work in construction and maintenance of the City of Wichita’s critical infrastructure, with opportunities for training and growth, using a variety of equipment under supervision. Join a team that cares about their city and each other.

Work Days and Hours:

Monday - Friday, 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Bargaining Unit:

Service Employee's International (SEIU)

Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in street repair materials and construction tasks.
  • Flushing and maintaining sewer lines, repairing manholes, and sewer cleaning.
  • Loading and unloading materials like stone, gravel, and dirt.
  • Supporting skilled workers in maintenance activities.
  • Participating in snow and ice removal.
  • Street and gutter cleaning, refuse collection.
  • Ground maintenance tasks such as trimming and watering.
  • Operating vehicles as required.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to learn maintenance procedures and operate equipment.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy items and operate tools safely.
  • Effective communication and following instructions.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Kansas CDL with air brake endorsement within 120 days.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain Kansas Class B CDL with airbrakes and tankers within 6 months.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid Class B CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsement.
  • Experience in utility operations.

This position involves participation in a random drug testing program, pre-employment physical, and background check. Starting pay is determined by city policy or bargaining agreement.
