Under the general directions of the Assistant Sewer Administrator, the Sewage Pump Station Operator is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the wastewater collection system. This includes sanitary sewers, pump stations, and related equipment and infrastructure. The maintainer will work to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of the system, prevent overflows and backups, and protect public health and the environment.
- Performs daily inspections/checks of pump stations, controls, pumps, valves, sewer lines, manholes, easements, cross countries, and other related equipment used in the operation of the collection system; maintains logs as required.
- Performs custodial duties at all WPCA properties, such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, dusting, trash removal, restroom cleaning, snow removal, and other similar duties as assigned.
- Operates and maintains pumps, valves, and other related wastewater equipment.
- Performs cleaning, maintenance, and repair of the sewer collection system including sewer mainlines, wet wells, siphons, Interceptor Sewers, Trunk Sewers, Cross Countries, and Easements using specialized equipment like jet trucks, vacuum trucks, and combination jet/vac trucks to diagnose and repair system issues.
- May assist with CCTV I&I inspections of town sewer and storm lines to diagnose issues within the systems.
- Will be issued a pager, phone, or other electronic notification device and will be periodically on call 24/7 to respond to pump station system failures or other emergencies.
- Must have the physical ability to lift heavy objects such as manhole covers, equipment, piping, tools, etc., and work within confined spaces for extended periods, in various weather conditions.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, wear appropriate PPE, participate in safety training and meetings, and have basic knowledge of OSHA safety policies.
- Communicate effectively with the public and stakeholders, and work well with team members, including operators, engineers, subcontractors, and supervisors.
- Perform other related work and tasks as assigned by the Sewer Administrator or designee.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skill, and Ability:
- Skilled in using tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance, pump stations, mechanical equipment, and building repair; must have mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to learn sewer collection system layouts for maintenance, inspection, and infrastructure location.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer skills and internet understanding.
Experience and Training:
- High school graduation, trade school, or equivalent.
- Must possess or obtain within 6 months a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) w/tanker endorsement.
- Experience in wastewater collection systems, construction, or related field preferred.
If Class 2 Sewer Collection Certificate is obtained, wage grade moves to F.
Supervision:
Works under the general direction of the Assistant Sewer Administrator or designee.
