Job description

About Lodestar Law

Lodestar Law LLC is dedicated to advocating for injured workers and helping them navigate some of the most challenging periods of their lives. Our highly specialized practice represents U.S. government contractors and other injured workers in claims arising under the Defense Base Act (DBA), the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, and the Non-Appropriated Fund Instrumentalities Act (NAFI). Our clients may have worked on military installations, government facilities, research stations, or in active conflict zones around the world.

We are a fully remote, forward-thinking law firm built on trust, accountability, responsiveness, and exceptional client service. We believe technology should enhance legal practice, not replace legal judgment or human connection. We use firm-approved systems to reduce repetitive administrative work so our attorneys can focus on advanced legal analysis, strategy, advocacy, and client relationships. Employees must follow all firm confidentiality, security, technology, and AI-use policies.

Who Thrives at Lodestar
  • Trustworthy, honest, dependable, and accountable without constant supervision.
  • Comfortable working independently while communicating proactively with a fully remote team.
  • Highly organized, responsive, and committed to meeting deadlines.
  • Compassionate with injured clients while maintaining sound professional judgment.
  • Curious, adaptable, and willing to learn specialized law, firm systems, and approved workflows.
  • Committed to confidentiality, accuracy, ethical practice, and continuous improvement.
Position Overview

The Settlement Attorney will focus on evaluating, negotiating, documenting, and advancing resolutions in DBA, NAFI, Longshore Act, and related federal workers’ compensation matters. This attorney will work closely with clients, litigation attorneys, opposing counsel, carriers, and the firm’s settlement support team to move cases from settlement evaluation through fully executed agreements, approval, payment, and appropriate closure. The ideal candidate is a strategic negotiator and meticulous document reviewer who can manage a large pipeline without losing sight of client goals or approval requirements.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assess settlement readiness by reviewing liability, medical evidence, disability exposure, compensation history, vocational issues, litigation risk, and client objectives.
  • Develop settlement valuations and negotiation strategies in collaboration with the handling team.
  • Counsel clients regarding settlement structure, legal effect, risks, tradeoffs, and required documentation.
  • Negotiate with opposing counsel, carriers, and other stakeholders to pursue favorable and practical resolutions.
  • Draft or review settlement agreements, releases, stipulations, fee documents, and supporting submissions for accuracy and consistency.
  • Coordinate Section 8(i) settlement packages and related requirements, including necessary forms, signatures, supporting records, and approval submissions.
  • Identify missing documents, calculation discrepancies, Medicare-related issues, or language that could delay approval or adversely affect the client.
  • Track matters from mediation or agreement in principle through execution, submission, approval, payment, fee receipt, and case closure.
  • Respond promptly to returned or deficient settlement packages and coordinate corrections with the appropriate team members
  • Maintain clear status documentation and communicate delays, approvals, payment issues, and next steps to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with litigation attorneys to ensure settlement positions reflect the complete evidentiary and procedural record.
  • Use firm-approved workflows to improve settlement throughput while personally verifying all material terms, calculations, filings, and client communications.
Success in This Role
  • Moves a substantial settlement pipeline forward through disciplined follow-up and deadline control.
  • Produces accurate, complete settlement packages that minimize preventable returns or approval delays.
  • Negotiates firmly and professionally while maintaining credibility and productive working relationships.
  • Explains complex settlement terms in a client-friendly manner and confirms informed decision-making.
  • Maintains close attention to calculations, releases, signatures, approval status, payment, and closure.
Required Qualifications

  • Strong negotiation, legal analysis, drafting, document review, and client-counseling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large volume of matters, follow-ups, and detailed documentation.
  • Exceptional accuracy with settlement terms, calculations, deadlines, and execution requirements.
  • High integrity, discretion, reliability, and commitment to client service.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate consistently in a fully remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with DBA, NAFI, Longshore Act, workers’ compensation, administrative claims, personal injury settlements, or structured resolution work.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing Section 8(i) settlements and related approval packages.
  • Experience with mediation, settlement conferences, carrier negotiations, and post-settlement payment follow-up.
Benefits Highlights
