Job summary

The Washington State House of Representatives is seeking dependable candidates for multiple temporary vacancies in House Security for the 2027 Legislative Session. Training will cover CPR and AED; the assignment may lead to recurring annual roles during sessions.

Positions start January 04, 2027, with training December 07–11, 2026. The work includes security presence, access control, and assistance to representatives and staff in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate or equivalent.
• No previous security related criminal convictions.
• Ability to work as non-partisan staff in a partisan environment.
• Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods.
• Ability to carry or move objects up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work outdoors during inclement weather.
• A valid driver’s license is required for driving duties.

Responsibilities

• Provide security presence at access points, posts, or remote locations; patrol and monitor areas.
• Monitor and control access, video surveillance, and building access systems; report incidents.
• Work cooperatively within a structured organizational system with supervisors and staff.
• Comply with security policies and House Rules; assist staff as needed.
• Assist state representatives, legislative staff, and visitors as needed.
• May perform other related duties as required.

SALARY: $22.97 – $26.36 hourly, dependent upon qualifications

About The House of Representatives

The House of Representatives (House) comprises half of the Washington State Legislature and is made of 98 members, elected to serve two-year terms representing 49 legislative districts. The House employs 250 full-time year-round staff and 100 temporary session staff and interns. The Legislature meets annually beginning on the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed.

Our workplace is on the beautiful Capitol Campus in Olympia. The 486-acre campus includes the Legislative Building and other historic structures, as well as popular parks and trails with views of Capitol Lake, Budd Inlet, and the Olympic Mountains.

Position Profile

The Washington State House of Representatives is seeking dependable candidates for multiple vacancies for temporary positions with House Security for the 2027 Legislative Session. Job training and orientation will be providedat the beginning of the assignment and will include CPR and AED training. This position can lead to a recurring annual position during subsequent legislative sessions.

These positions are anticipated to start January 04, 2027. Training for these positions will be conducted December 07-11, 2026

How You’ll Be Expected to Contribute

• Provide security presence at access points, posts, or remote locations; foot patrol; monitor and control access to parking lots, hearing rooms, and legislative facilities; monitor and control video surveillance and building access control systems; report security incidents and prepare written reports; maintain order and decorum, enforce House Rules.
• Observe, detect, deter, and report security and safety issues to supervisor, law enforcement, or others as required by training, policies, and procedures; provide prompt response to emergencies, calls for service, disruptions, or other incidents; provide CPR and/or AED treatment as needed; identify, report, and resolve workplace safety issues; operate a mid-sized passenger van and transport passengers.
• Work cooperatively within a structured organizational system with assigned positions, co-workers, your supervisor and executive management staff.
• Comply with security policies, House Rules, and the Washington State House Personnel Policy & Procedure Manual.
• Assist state representatives, legislative staff, and visitors as needed.
• May perform other related duties as required.

The Successful Candidate Will Meet These Qualifications

• Ability to ascend and descend stairs in emergency situations such as if the power is out;
• A valid driver's license is required for any driving duties;
• Ability to work alongside persons with diverse backgrounds, interests, and capabilities;
• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with multiple groups in a fast-paced environment;
• A dependable and strong work ethic, and the ability to maintain high-level professionalism and maintain confidentiality at all times;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Ability to seek and follow supervisory direction as required, positive attitude and the ability to be an exceptional team member, ability to multi-task and to handle complex and difficult situations;
• Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

• Previous security, military, or law enforcement experience
• Proficiency using email.

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

• These positions will run through the scheduled end of the 2027 Legislative Session which is tentatively Sunday, April 25, 2027. If necessary, the position may be extended to a maximum of six months for any special legislative session.
• House Security session employees generally work forty hours per week with a variety of schedules available.
• The position is at-will and non-partisan during the legislative session.
• Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the job.
