Job description

THE SERVICES ASSISTANT POSITION TITLE IS PART OF NEW YORK STATE CIVIL SERVICE'S HELP PROGRAM AND DOES NOT REQUIRE A CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION AT THIS TIME. Performs a variety of duties to support the efficient operation of assigned programs at the Department of Aging and Youth. This position exists primarily to provide moderately complex information and referral services to individuals and their family members who request or require assistance. The complexity of work assignments differentiates this position from Services Worker. Specific tasks will vary according to the designated program area(s), though most will include significant contact with the public and other human service agencies. Work is carried out under general supervision of a higher level position. Supervision may be exercised over subordinates and volunteers. The incumbent does related work as required.

  • Interviews clients to determine their needs, identifies and recommends programs and services to meet these needs;
  • Documents requests, needs, recommendations and contacts in case records;

Knowledge of the characteristics, needs and interests of members of diverse populations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of diverse populations, their delegates, other agencies and co-workers; ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information; knowledge of effective interviewing techniques; knowledge of community agencies, facilities, and services; ability to organize and prioritize work activities; ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously; ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to understand oral and written instructions, policies and procedures; tact; courtesy; integrity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Either:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NY State registered four year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a health or human services-related field (e.g. nursing, psychology, sociology, gerontology, social work, health science); or
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NY State registered two year college with an associate’s degree in a health or human services-related field and two years of full-time paid experience in human services (e.g. nursing, community health, social services); or
  3. Graduation from senior high school and four years of full-time paid experience in human services (e.g. nursing, community health, social services).
SPECIAL NOTE: EDUCATION:

Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position.
