Description

About Us : The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas :

  • The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
  • The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

The Role :

This is the second level in the Service Worker series, responsible for performing skilled and complex construction, maintenance, and repair work within assigned areas. Duties include operating heavy landscaping equipment, maintaining irrigation systems, and ensuring the upkeep of parks, right-of-ways, and sports fields. The role also involves responding to citizen concerns, enforcing park regulations, deterring vandalism, and assisting in emergencies. Additionally, the position requires scheduling and managing irrigation systems to support healthy plant and turf growth.

Salary : This position is :

  • FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
  • A Grade 312 with with an hourly rate between $22.6404 - $33.9606

Regular status positions offer :

  • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays throughout the calendar year.
  • Vacation leave accrues at :

5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours / 17.25

  • days per year)
  • Increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years
  • Then caps out at 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours / 14.25 days
  • per year).
  • Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day.

Retirement :

This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).

  • The current contribution rate is 12.27%.
  • Contributions are mandatory, and are collected each pay period.

Essential Functions

  • Operates heavy mowing equipment, chain saws, weed eaters, brush tractors, hi-lifts, and other landscape equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs and programs sprinkler systems.
  • Maintains parks, irrigation systems and right-of-ways.
  • Trims trees and bushes and maintains plant health. May also trim vegetation obstructing sprinklers.
  • Makes repairs to flood irrigation lines and valves.
  • Responds to, and resolves citizen complaints pertaining to parks facilities.
  • Explains and educates park policies and regulations to park patrons.
  • Maintains high visibility to dissuade vandalism and crime in park areas.
  • Maintains sprinklers in infields and turf at sports fields.
  • Maintains and updates journal and database for all automatic control schedules.
  • Ensures that reserved facilities are maintained in a safe, clean condition; checks for permits.
  • Provides assistance in emergency situations; calls for police or medical assistance.
  • Programs and manages schedules for irrigation controllers to promote healthy turf and plant material.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Special Requirements / Success Factors

Two years of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and / or in the operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment relative to the area of assignment.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

Knowledge of :

  • Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
  • Safety requirements and precautions
  • Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned area of responsibility
  • Safety requirements and precautions including confined space entry procedures
  • Blue stake laws and underground utility identification practices
  • Computers and applicable data management and maintenance programs for area of responsibility, if required
  • Purchasing procedures depending on area of assignment

Ability to :

  • Read, understand and explain blue prints, maps, and blue staking procedures
  • Deal courteously with the public and answer citizen questions
  • Safely barricade work sites; understand and follow safe working practices
  • Determine what equipment, tools, manpower and materials will be needed to complete assigned projects
  • Operate light, medium, and heavy equipment; perform maintenance and minor repairs on it
  • Complete reports and logs and enter and retrieve computer data
  • Follow instructions, either in written form or presented orally
  • Develop effective working relationships with coworkers, City staff, management, the public and others
  • Operate city vehicles; depending on area of assignment

Special Requirements

  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
  • May be subject to call back, stand-by duty and rotating shifts.
  • Valid AZ Driver's License.
