Job summary

Werner Enterprises in West Columbia, SC, is seeking a mobile service mechanic to travel within a 60-mile radius to repair tractors and trailers at customers' yards or on-site. This safety-sensitive position requires the ability to perform roadside repairs and maintain service trucks.

You will diagnose and fix tire, electrical, braking, and structural issues, document work orders, and ensure parts availability.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years truck and trailer repair experience.
• Ability to read and write.
• Good communication skills.
• Basic computer knowledge and data entry experience.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Repair trucks and trailers including tire repair/replacement; replace fuel filters, jump start trucks or refrigerated trailers; replace batteries, alternators, door seals, dollies, doors and hardware, wheel seals, air brake systems; repair coolant leaks, patch holes in trailer roof/panels/floor.
• Repair electrical and lighting problems; repair suspension and air ride systems; weld and repair mud flap brackets, ICC bumpers, and other weld-required components.
• Communicate with Shop Manager and Road Breakdown via phone or 2-way radio.
• Fill out work orders and document parts used and labor times.
• Drive service truck from shop to site and back; keep truck fueled and maintained; keep it clean.
• Keep service truck parts inventoried and restock as needed; carry parts for on-site repairs.

Job description

The main purpose of this position is to travel within a 60 mile general radius to repair Tractors / Trailers that need roadside assistance and to make repairs to Tractors/ Trailers that are located at customers’ shipping yards or parking lots. Due to the nature of the essential job functions of this role, this is a safety sensitive position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Repair trucks and trailers to include tire repair and/or tire replacement. Replace fuel filters, jump start trucks or refrigerated trailers. Replace batteries, alternators, trailer door seals, trailer dolly legs, trailer doors and hardware, wheel seals, air brake systems repairs, coolant leaks, patch holes in trailer roof, side panels, and floor. Repair electrical and lighting problems, repair suspension and air ride systems, weld and repair mud flap brackets, ICC bumpers, and other components that may need welding. Any other mechanic repairs that can be done outside of the shop building.
• Communicate with Shop Manager, Road Breakdown by using cell phone or 2-way radio.
• Fill out work orders and document parts used and labor times for repairs completed.
• Drive service truck from shop to service site and return to the shop. Keep service truck fueled and complete proper maintenance to keep the service truck operational. Keep service trucks clean.
• Keep service truck parts inventoried and restock parts as needed. This includes taking along parts that maybe needed to compete repairs on site
• Any additional duties requested by the shop manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Mechanic aptitude and ability to operate shop tools and air tools.
• Operate a service truck.
• Ability to read shop service manuals.
• Be able to work independently.
• Ability to lift in excess of 100 lbs.
