Job summary

Hussmann is seeking an experienced technician in HVAC and refrigeration maintenance in Reno, Nevada. The ideal candidate will perform diagnostics and repairs in supermarkets, convenience stores, and other facilities. Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems and excellent customer service skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • 7 years experience in HVAC or 5 years with certification from a Technical School.
  • Must possess EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Capable of lifting up to fifty pounds repetitively.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Performs maintenance, diagnosis and repair of refrigeration, heating & air‑conditioning systems commonly installed in supermarkets, convenience stores and cold storage facilities. Operates independently with minimal direct supervision. Develops first line customer relations and identifies potential sales opportunities.
  • Performs prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self‑contained temperature‑controlled merchandisers.
  • Has enough system knowledge to match customer needs with potential sales opportunities and complete rapid/accurate diagnosis.
  • Manages truck inventory, orders, receives, bills out and maintains parts responsibly with a minimum of waste. Manages assigned vehicle within all company guidelines and maintains a clean vehicle, performing required maintenance on time.
  • Completes necessary documents and electronic communication in a thorough, accurate, professional and timely manner, utilizing a hand‑held device to complete paperwork and invoicing requirements.
  • Systematically utilizes mirror and flashlight to check all joints; installs PVC drain pipe, sets and trims cases, installs and adjusts glass doors and frames, uses temperature sensors, brazes and soldering techniques, and determines proper coil layout in complex boxes.
  • Accurately identifies pipe size and fittings by sight; performs refrigerant and oil conversions, test oil during conversion and electric welds a variety of metals and joint types.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and correctly sizes thermostatic expansion valves.
  • Works with pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, TEV troubleshooting and replacement, and traces complex schematic diagrams.
  • Understands low/high pressure oil systems, split condensing/low ambient controls, refrigerated equipment startup, EMS controls, new retail store refrigeration startup, air‑flow characteristics and testing, motor VFDs, all system defrost types, recovery setup, torch setup, compressor operating parameters, conventional refrigeration layout, parallel rack system layout, and advanced wiring diagrams; CO₂ refrigeration preferred.
  • Holds working knowledge of gauge, scale, recovery, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, three‑phase motors, compressor operating parameters, oil differential pressure valves and oil level controls.
  • Detects and repairs leaks on conventional systems and parallel racks, soldering copper‑to‑brass and copper‑to‑steel, conducts compressor diagnosis and replacements, troubleshoots and repairs more complex service calls, and checks/adjusts oil management system and compressor oil level control.
  • Serves as a technical resource to other technicians and leads HVAC/R preventive maintenance programs.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Formal Education Requirement:

  • Required Level: High School Diploma/GED
  • Preferred Level: HVAC‑R Technical School Degree

Minimum Years Of Experience Necessary

  • External Candidates: 7 years in the field or 5 years with Certification from a Technical School
  • Internal Candidates: 3 years as a Certified Technician with completion of OJT & Skills Assessment
Additional Information
  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License and maintain a safe driving record in accordance with the Fleet Policy.
  • Must be physically able to walk distances, bench and crouch, climb ladders, work at high elevations and lift/carry objects up to fifty pounds repetitively for extended periods.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be detail oriented, and highly motivated.
  • Must have strong mechanical aptitude including knowledge of basic maintenance tasks and use of hand tools.
  • Must be able to work nights and/or weekends as required.
  • Working knowledge of basic refrigeration and/or knowledge of commercial refrigeration and HVAC is preferred.
  • Strong leadership and business acumen.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Superior decision‑making ability and paperwork skills.
