PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Performs skilled tasks of average difficulty following specific policies/procedures/methods in responding to written/verbal instructions regarding the installation, inspection, testing, adjusting, and repair of all types/models of gas utilization appliances/equipment and systems for residential/commercial/industrial users.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all the job duties of a less complex nature of a Service Technician II to include inspecting and testing appliances, equipment and associated systems on customers premises and fixing the problem. Uses human senses, leak-detecting solution, and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detector, manometer, pressure gauge to detect problem and to verify that the problem has been corrected.
  • Locks, unlocks, reads, changes, and removes meters; initiates plugged service. Deliveries cylinders as directed. Investigates high bill complaints and completes service orders as to work performed. Collects money on C.O.D. orders and plug meter orders; properly accounts for revenues collected and delivers money to designated employee.
  • Functions as a first responder in gas-related situations such as fires, leaks, broken pipes, explosion. Performs necessary emergency repairs and applies stopper when necessary. Stands‑by at the site, when necessary, until properly relieved by appropriate personnel.
  • Provides and extends at all times a courteous and tactful demeanor when dealing with all customers or the public. Advises or instructs consumer in the proper and efficient operation of their appliances/equipment.
  • Drives service truck and maintains necessary truck supplies and equipment.
  • Performs clerical/administrative duties such as preparing reports, inputting data into the computer, etc.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner. Complies with and where required enforces all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and established/adopted by the Company. Cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping to include the reporting and rectifying, as qualified, any unsafe conditions or act. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Performs as Tank Truck Driver, Installer 1/C, Tanker Driver, Cylinder Driver or Meter Reader as required; receives appropriate higher grade in accordance with the C.B.A.
  • Performs related and other work as required and/or directed.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.
Qualifications

Education/Certification/License:

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.
  • Completed all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement, with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49. and appropriate clearance certificate such as TWIC.
  • Satisfactory completion of in-house Service Technician Training and Field Evaluation; must pass continuing refresher courses.

Experience:

  • Approximately 18 months gas service work experience, not less then one year of which must have been in the repair and servicing of gas equipment/appliances/controls: these experience requirements may be reduced at management’s discretion based on need and for the individual who demonstrates exceptional ability and skills to perform the duties of Service Technician III.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to effectively perform the work requirements and to deal tactfully and courteously with customers.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws and have a clean traffic abstract.
  • Possesses working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures, pertinent codes (such as NFPA #58 and #59) regulations, standards and safety rules/regulations/practices in addition to standard practices and procedures for this trade.
  • Proficient in the proper use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the trade and have a good safety record; ability to use computer.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement, with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49. and appropriate clearance certificate such as TWIC.

Supervision:

  • Under the general supervision of the General Manager, receives work assignments and instructions from the Operations Manager, Operations Superintendent, Operations Supervisor or Leadman/Foreman, as well as service requirements from the Office staff.
  • Latitude for independent judgment and action in carrying out the details as prescribed in Company/department policy, procedures or standards.
  • Occasionally has a helper; instructs helper/trainee in proper methods, procedures, etc. and ensures adherence to safety rules and practices.

Explanatory Remarks:

Employees in the Service Technician III classification are essentially trouble shooters, and most assignments are referred to as “first calls.” They effect immediate repairs or repairs of a non-complex nature and where necessary, temporary repairs or adjustments. At this level emphasis is placed upon acquiring greater knowledge of the basic techniques of the trade. Occasionally, the incumbent may be given assignments of higher level in order that he/she may gain experience and knowledge of the more difficult operations. The chief distinguishing feature between this position and the

work performed by the Service Technician II is in the degree of complexity and difficulty of the service cases involved which generally can be performed effectively, efficiently, and safely through education and experience on the job. Aside from the qualifications noted in the job specifications above, progression to Service Technician II is also contingent upon vacancy.

Working Conditions/Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Works indoors and outdoors; crawls under houses and worked in confined spaces.
  • Degree to which exposed to gas fumes varies from light to an occasionally heavy concentration requiring the use of a gas respirator.
  • Subject to work on weekends, holidays, and nights to include emergency call outs.
  • Good physical condition to perform the requirements of the job and maintain certification/qualification/license.
  • No back or serious eye limitation including color blindness or restriction on respirator use; must have a keen sense of smell.
  • Must not have claustrophobia.
  • Work involves moderate to heavy degree of physical effort, e.g. to move ranges, refrigerators, etc.
