Job description

Job Purpose

The employee performs a full range of maintenance, repair, and service activities on construction and mining machinery. The employee uses considerable independent judgment in making decisions without supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Diagnoses, services, and repairs various systems on heavy equipment, including mechanical and electronic controls, transmissions, and pneumatic systems.
  2. Troubleshoots malfunctions and repairs equipment.
  3. Repairs and services track drive sprockets, rails, idler wheels, hand bars, track adjusters, hydraulic components, reversers, final drives, brake bands, steering clutches, and hydrostatic transmissions.
  4. Services, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift, hydrostatic drive, heavy-duty multi-axle suspensions.
  5. Tunes diesel engines, services valves, fuel filters, turbochargers, and performs pressure checks, adjusts injector heights, fuel racks, and governors.
  6. Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in cooling, drive, brake, electrical, steering, heating, air conditioning, hydraulic, and air systems.
  7. Overhauls engines, replaces engines, and rebuilds components.
  8. Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good condition.
  9. May assist in training lower-level workers in mechanical repair techniques.
  10. Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent; accredited trade school graduate preferred.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in the construction and mining machinery industry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in machinery repair and maintenance.
  2. Knowledge of safety issues related to tools, equipment, and supplies.
  3. Skills in using hand tools, mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
  4. Skills in diagnostic testing, tuning equipment, and welding (gas and electric).
  5. Ability to pass and maintain drug and alcohol testing as per company policy.
  6. Ability to lift 50 pounds, and bend and twist frequently.
  7. Ability to read manuals and schematics, and rebuild engines and driveline components.
  8. Dependable and capable of working independently.
  9. Must hold a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  10. Ability to operate test equipment and troubleshoot effectively.
  11. Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics.
