Job summary

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

Responsibilities

  • Fuels and tows aircraft using safe methods; training provided.
  • Operate POS machines and other office equipment.
  • Collect payments and maintain fuel usage records.
  • Keep terminal and restrooms clean; assist with airport grounds when needed.
  • Communicate clearly with employees and customers; respond to radio calls.
  • Assist in training new Airport Operations staff and support roles.
  • Follow Airport Emergency Action Plan when required.
  • Support inspections of airport facilities and equipment.

SUMMARY

The Service Specialist is a part-time position that works under the direct supervision of the Airport Manager. The employee fuels and tows aircraft; collects and processes fuel and supplies payments; monitors 2-way radio and responds to aircraft requesting information; monitors airport systems; and performs general inside and outside minor maintenance which includes daily cleaning of the terminal building, including bathrooms. This part-time position generally requires no more than 28 hours of work per week but may be temporarily exceeded when deemed necessary by the Airport Authority.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITY
  • Performs refueling of aircraft that includes climbing small ladders to fuel some types of aircraft.
  • Maintains a clean workspace, terminal building, restrooms, and - when necessary - airport grounds.
  • Communicates clearly and without hesitation with employees and customers.
  • Maintains accurate records dealing with fuel usage and fee collection.
  • Safely and efficiently operates: Point-of-Sale credit card machines; computers; adding machine; copiers; fax machines; and other miscellaneous office equipment.
  • Fuels and tows aircraft by using proper, safe methods (training provided).
  • Transfers fuel from the fuel farm to the fuel truck as required.
  • Executes Airport Emergency Action Plan (when necessary).
  • Assists in the training and supervision of new Airport Operations/Services personnel.
  • Assists with the Airport Emergency cellphone when the Airport Manager is out of town or on vacation.
  • Assists with the data recording and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Assists with the records and procedures for offloading of fuel into the fuel farm.
  • Assists Airport Manager with inspections of airport facilities.
  • The employee must be able to safely operate the following equipment: Fuel pumps and fuel truck, tug or tractor and tow bar required to move aircraft, lawn mowers, weed eaters and other lawn care equipment and 2-way radios (fixed and hand-held).
  • Performs any other tasks as directed by the Airport Manager or Airport Authority.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • An ability to maintain a harmonious working relationship with co-workers and the public in a professional and courteous manner, with special emphasis on excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work with minimal daily supervision.
  • Ability to work a variable work schedule three (3) to five (5) days a week with weekend and holiday work required.
  • Ability to report for work as scheduled and on-time and perform the duties of the position for a minimum of four (4) hours per day of work.
  • Ability to learn how to safely and properly fuel various makes and models of aircraft, collect and process payments, and to properly communicate with aircraft using the radio.
  • Ability to learn how to properly operate lawn mowing tractors and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow Federal and State regulations dealing with aviation.
  • Ability to understand and comply with Airport policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and / or the ability to learn to recognize occupational hazards and implement appropriate safety precautions.
  • Ability to distinguish between different types of aviation fuels with the ability to read and understand label information.
  • Depth perception and peripheral vision acuity necessary to safely operate the fuel truck and an aircraft tug tractor to move aircraft on the ramp and into / out of hangars.
  • Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations and procedures.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Tennessee drivers’ license
  • Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Physical Requirements -

Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Regular performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds; may require the complex operation of gasoline, electric or diesel-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls, fine adjustments or both. May work in adverse environmental conditions and hazardous work conditions. The employee will be exposed to loud noise, machinery with moving parts, aircraft propellers, jet engine exhaust, sanitization of bathroom facilities and occasional exposure to mild chemical substances.

Sensory Requirements -

Tasks require visual perception and discrimination including color and depth. Tasks require perception and discrimination of odor and sound.
