Job summary

Lilly is seeking a senior VMware Platform Engineer to maintain on-premises and Azure-based IaaS, ensure high availability for critical workloads, and lead private cloud deployments across global sites. You will implement AI-driven automation, observability, and IaC to streamline operations and reduce outages.

The role requires 4+ years in VMware ESX, strong networking and storage experience, and the ability to guide geographically distributed teams while aligning with security and compliance

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, or related field.
4+ years of experience as VMware ESX / Platform Engineer.
Authorized to work full-time in the United States.
Experience with AI-enabled automation tools such as Claude Code or Codex.
Hands-on experience with automated infrastructure availability and resiliency at enterprise scale.
Experience with VMware/vSphere and storage replication.
Experience with virtualized Windows and Linux operating systems.
Technical leadership for enterprise-grade infrastructure solutions and deployments across multiple global locations.
Ability to optimize, configure, and maintain private cloud infrastructure.
Strong networking knowledge including VLANs and trunking.
Experience configuring Distributed Switches (vDS).
Less than 5% travel.

Maintain and manage enterprise VMware ESX-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service capabilities on-premises and in Microsoft Azure
Maintain system stability and ensure high availability for critical workloads
Automate operational tasks using AI Ops, event-driven automation, observability, and infrastructure as code
Support multi-datacenter operations and stretch clusters for Lilly manufacturing and research sites
Implement architectural and operational solutions that improve infrastructure availability and reliability
Improve observability to help prevent outages
Apply AI-powered coding and automation tools to accelerate engineering workflows
Optimize, configure, and maintain private cloud infrastructure capabilities
Lead deployment of enterprise-grade infrastructure solutions across multiple global locations
Provide mentorship and direction to global Lilly operations SMEs and platform infrastructure operations SMEs
Support daily operations for the server virtualization platform
Identify technology opportunities and accelerate Lilly's AI Ops journey
Configure and lead VMware networking components, including Distributed Switches, for efficient and secure network communication

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related technical field
4+ years of experience as a VMware ESX / Platform Engineer
Authorized to work full-time in the United States
Demonstrated experience or exposure to AI-enabled automation tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar
Hands-on experience with automated infrastructure availability and resiliency at enterprise scale
Experience with VMware/vSphere and storage replication
Experience with virtualized Windows or Linux operating system platforms
Technical leadership supporting enterprise-grade infrastructure solutions and deployments at multiple global locations
Ability to optimize, configure, and maintain private cloud infrastructure
Deep understanding of networking concepts, including VLANs and trunking
Prior experience configuring and leading VMware networking components, including Distributed Switches (vDS)
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Experience leading operations of a global large-scale ESX infrastructure service
Experience with Dell SAN storage or cloud certifications is a bonus
Knowledge of VMware ESX, Azure VMware Service, IaaS cloud services such as EC2 and Azure Compute is a bonus
Knowledge of Python, JSON, YAML, ARM, or Git is a bonus
Experience with Zerto and VMware HCX technologies is a plus
Willingness to work the stated shift schedule and rotating Monday-to-Friday or Thursday-to-Monday shifts
Less than 5% travel
