Job summary

MxV Rail's Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) in Pueblo, Colorado seeks an Instructor to serve as a subject matter expert for hazardous materials emergency response training across rail, highway, and intermodal transport.

You will deliver classroom instruction, supervise field exercises, adapt materials to learner needs, and support curriculum development, assessment, and recertification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom instruction, supervise field exercises, and support SERTC training programs in Pueblo and at remote locations.
  • Use approved curriculum, lesson plans, assessments, scenarios, and instructor guides consistently while adapting facilitation to learner needs and course objectives.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and practical feedback to support course analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation, revision, and recertification.
  • Contribute positively to accomplishing the training team's overall objectives. Function as a team member.
  • Document student, instructor, and stakeholder feedback and recommend improvements to curriculum, instructional aids, training props, assessments, and the student experience.
  • Develop relationships with students, agencies, industry partners, and current and prospective clients; communicate SERTC capabilities and identify opportunities for contract-course deliveries, repeat business, and referrals.
  • Support client outreach, course scoping, proposals, delivery preparation, and follow-up in coordination with SERTC leadership.
  • Provide logistical support for training activities by setting up and taking down training aids.
  • Promote safety and professional philosophy when working with internal and external customers and other employees.
  • Provide the SERTC leadership team with recommendations on training equipment, inventory, maintenance, and staffing needs.
  • Participate in professional focus groups, boards, and advisory committees as assigned.
  • Collaborate with MxV Rail’s Operations team to support safety initiatives and ensure safe classroom instruction and field exercises.
  • Create and maintain positive working relationships and support the implementation of company initiatives aimed at developing an engaged and productive workforce.
  • Ability to remain committed to compliance with all internal policies and legal regulations in every area of the organization's daily activity, including fostering the development of short- and long-term plans, policies, and guidelines.

Overview:

The Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) at MxV Rail is seeking a dynamic and motivated Instructor to serve as a subject matter expert for hazardous materials emergency response training, including rail, highway, intermodal, and flammable liquids transportation. The ideal candidate will assist in the analysis and decision-making processes for developing and delivering training courses. Our new team member can coordinate and deliver all SERTC curriculum while ensuring a positive student experience. This position reports to the SERTC Lead Instructor.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide classroom instruction, supervise field exercises, and support SERTC training programs in Pueblo and at remote locations.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of working knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response, specifically in rail, highway, intermodal transportation, and flammable liquids.
  • Current Hazardous Materials Technician certification; Firefighter I or NFPA 1081 equivalent; Fire Instructor I; and flammable-liquid firefighting experience.
  • Ability to provide engaging classroom instruction and supervise realistic field exercises while maintaining a safe, professional, and positive student experience.
  • Ability to use approved course materials, communicate technical information clearly, and contribute subject matter expertise to curriculum improvement.
  • Ability to communicate SERTC expertise to current and prospective clients, identify potential training needs, and support contract-course business development.
  • Ability to function effectively under pressure, work independently toward company goals, and contribute to a collaborative, accountable, inclusive, and high-performing team.
  • Demonstrable computer skills using Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to travel; current and valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Instructors not proficient with all SERTC training props and aids will complete cross-training to acquire required proficiencies.
  • MxV Rail policy requires all prospective employees to complete a criminal background check (Disclosure for Consumer Reports Consent Form) and a pre-employment substance abuse screening (Applicant Consent for Drug Testing Form) as a condition of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ten years of working experience and knowledge in the field of HazMat emergency response, specifically in rail, highway, and intermodal transportation.
  • Tank Car Specialist, Highway Emergency Response, Intermodal Specialist, Fire Fighter II, and FEMA NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, and 700 credentials.
Working Environment and Level of Physical Activity:
  • Environment: Office and field environments. Must be able to walk in an industrial and/or railroad environment, including uneven surfaces such as ballast.
  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.Travel: Travel is required for remote deliveries, industry events, client outreach, and stakeholder meetings.
Schedule and Work Location:
  • The work location is Pueblo, Colorado.
  • In-person 40-hour work week at our Operations and Training Center.
  • The ideal candidate will be located in or within 60 miles of Pueblo, Colorado.
