Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; 5 years of security, law enforcement, and/or military experience.
  • Valid New York State Security Guard license.
  • Valid New York State driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Basic knowledge of computers, email, and report-writing applications.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Public Safety personnel and manage daily shift assignments.
  • Respond to emergencies and incidents on campus and at off-campus locations.
  • Prepare complete incident and investigative reports.
  • Safeguard evidence and recovered property pending final disposition.

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is seeking a Sergeant to provide frontline supervision and support the Department of Public Safety in maintaining a safe, secure, and student-centered campus environment. Under the direction of Public Safety administration, the Sergeant supervises security personnel, coordinates daily shift operations, responds to emergencies and calls for assistance, and ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures. The Sergeant also conducts investigations, prepares reports, safeguards evidence and recovered property, and serves as Incident Commander during critical incidents when assigned.

Essential Functions
Supervision & Shift Operations
  • Supervise and monitor the performance of Public Safety personnel.
  • Prepare and implement daily assignments and staffing schedules.
  • Conduct routine inspections of personnel, uniforms, equipment, and logbooks.
  • Ensure personnel comply with departmental rules, Standard Operating Procedures, and established safety protocols.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and support to security personnel during daily operations.
  • Work rotating tours and assignments based on departmental needs.
Emergency & Public Safety Response
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, calls for assistance, and other incidents on campus and at designated off-campus locations.
  • Maintain radio communication with Central Dispatch and other essential personnel.
  • Assume Incident Commander responsibilities during critical incidents until relieved by Public Safety administration.
  • Coordinate personnel and resources during emergencies and other significant incidents.
  • Support campus safety, access control, special events, and other Public Safety operations as assigned.
Investigations, Reports & Evidence
  • Conduct investigations and gather information related to incidents occurring on or affecting the FIT community.
  • Prepare complete, accurate, and timely incident and investigative reports in accordance with established reporting protocols.
  • Voucher, document, and safeguard evidence and recovered property pending final disposition.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure appropriate documentation is completed.
  • Provide testimony in College disciplinary and legal proceedings when required.
Customer Service & Campus Community
  • Interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and external stakeholders.
  • Respond to questions, concerns, and requests for assistance in a courteous and professional manner.
  • When assigned, provide security escorts for visiting dignitaries, VIPs, and members of the campus community.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive campus environment.
Other Duties
  • Perform other duties and assignments as directed by Public Safety administration.

Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience in security, law enforcement, and/or military service.
  • Valid New York State Security Guard license.
  • Valid New York State driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Basic knowledge of computers, email, and report-writing applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification or training.
  • Experience supervising security or public safety personnel.
  • Experience responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, or serving in an incident command capacity.

  • Ability to maintain professional appearance and uniform standards.
  • Knowledge of security and public safety practices, procedures, and protocols.
  • Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to supervise personnel, prioritize competing demands, and remain composed during emergency and high-pressure situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and timely written reports and documentation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and resolve conflicts professionally.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.

Salary

$68,659.77 per year

Work Schedule

Days/Hours: Rotating shifts, 40 hours per week; in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
