Job summary

Springfield College is seeking a Police Sergeant to lead campus safety operations, oversee patrols by cruiser, foot and bicycle, and ensure enforcement of college and state laws.

You will supervise Police Officers, CSOs, and assist Parking Services, Dispatch Center, Transportation & Shuttles, EMS, and student workers. The role is front-facing, requires on-call availability, and a strong sense of judgment.

Qualifications

Job description

The Springfield College Department of Public Safety is a full-service police agency that serves the College Community and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A Police Sergeant is expected to perform a full range of police duties, which include but are not limited to: prevention and detection, arrest, search and seizure, parking and traffic enforcement, crash investigation, and maintaining public order. Patrols will be conducted by cruiser, foot and bicycle of all campus areas and surrounding jurisdiction. Must be able to exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with violators of Massachusetts laws and College regulations, and be willing to work special assignments and be on call in time of emergency or special events. The shift will be determined by the needs of the department. Under general direction, the Police Sergeant supervises Police Officers, Community Service Officers (CSOs), and assists personnel in Parking Services, the Dispatch Center, Transportation & Shuttles, Student Workers, Springfield College EMS, etc. This is a front-facing position.

• Supervises police officers in performance of regularly assigned patrols and incident investigations; conducts roll calls, prepares shift notices and assignments; conducts performance evaluations; makes recommendations in matters concerning employee discipline and retention.
• Reviews police documentation including incident and accident reports and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, parking and traffic laws and with college regulations.
• Assists Chief, Deputy Chief and Lieutenant(s) in establishing procedures; makes recommendations regarding improvements or changes in department operations.
• Conducts accident and crime investigations and prepares detailed reports, including Vehicle Accident Reports and Incident Reports.
• Provides public assistance, escorts, first aid, vehicle jump-starts, and other related functions and duties as required.
• Processes evidence, prepares court cases, and provides legal testimony.
• Conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment; issues and accounts for police equipment.
• Represents the department at community, business meetings, and training. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Secures and patrols campus buildings and grounds.
• A Police Sergeant may be assigned one or more additional tasks such as schedule, event planning, field training, firearms instructor, CPR / First Aid / AED, evidence control, defensive tactics, fitness officer, quartermaster, armorer, vehicle maintenance, In-Service training coordinator, etc.
• Must develop a working knowledge of Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), Clery, Title IX, Campus SAVE Act, and other Federal and State guidelines.
• Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations.

• Associates REQUIRED if candidate has Reserve Intermittent Academy and has not completed Full-time MPTC or Massachusetts Special State Police Academy.
• Bachelor's Degree preferred.
• 1-3 years of relevant supervisory experience required.

This position requires successful completion of an approved full-time Massachusetts Police Training Council (MPTC) police academy or Massachusetts Special State Police (SSPO) Academy. Individuals with Reserve Intermittent Academy training AND a minimum of an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice MAY qualify for waiver in accordance with requirements set forth by the Massachusetts State Police. Must obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (Class A Large Capacity) in accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140, Section 131. Must be able to read write and speak English. Must pass a background check and psychological evaluation. Must have a valid driver's license, and candidate's driver history must be approved by the college’s vehicle insurance carrier for operation of all police or college vehicles. Must have Special State Police Officer (SSPO) Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days. Candidate must maintain these certifications to remain a licensed police officer. Employment may be terminated for failure to maintain certification.
