• Experience with C/C++, Java and OO design.
• Strong written and verbal English communication.

Responsibilities

Principal Systems Safety Engineer

Northrop Grumman Defense Systems seeks an experienced Principal Systems Safety Engineer to work on the Sentinel program. The primary design location is Roy, UT, with additional opportunities in Colorado Springs, CO. The role involves influencing product safety design and ensuring compliance with secret‑level security clearance requirements.

Role Overview

The System Safety Engineer will independently analyze and recommend design features that meet safety criteria to control or eliminate hazards. Responsibilities include active participation in the design of products, systems, support equipment, and facilities; creation of functional specifications and safety requirements; development of safety documents; performing operational audits; evaluating the interrelationship of system safety requirements with other design aspects; and ensuring cost‑effective program execution.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university.
• Minimum 5 years of experience for a Bachelor's degree, 3 years for a Master's, or 1 year for a Doctorate (if applicable).
• Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance at time of application and within scope, with ability to obtain Special Access Program (SAP) approval.
• At least 1 year of experience using MIL‑STD‑882E for preliminary, functional, subsystem, system, operating, and support hazard analysis.
• At least 1 year of experience with Safety Assessment Reports.
• At least 1 year of experience using DO‑178 or DO‑254 for design development.
• At least 1 year of experience with C/C++, Java, object‑oriented design or similar software development experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 1 year of experience using MIL‑STD‑882E or similar processes for hardware and/or software design development.
• Experience leading a team in software safety processes during Engineering and Manufacturing Development Phase.
• Experience developing in an Agile environment.
• Model Based Systems Engineering experience.
• Experience developing missile flight systems software.
• Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
• Weapon system experience (e.g., Minuteman III or similar military or industry experience).
• Active Top Secret clearance with investigation within the last 6 years.

Compensation and Schedule

Primary level salary range: $98,400.00 – $147,600.00. This position follows a 9/80 work schedule, allowing employees a nine‑hour day Monday through Thursday and every other Friday off.
