Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking to add System Safety Engineers to its Safety Engineering team in support of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program. Learn more about the GBSD program here. Northrop Grumman supports the Air Force’s sustainment, development, production and deployment of hardware and system modifications for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Ground and Airborne Launch Control Systems, Launch Facilities and associated infrastructure.

The System Safety Engineer influences design to meet safety expectations and requirements for Northrop Grumman products. The successful candidate will analyze and recommend design features that meet safety criteria to control or eliminate hazards, actively participate in product/system design, create functional specifications, and establish safety requirements. Responsibilities include developing safety documents, supporting customer and operational range requirements, auditing operational areas, and evaluating the interrelationship of safety requirements with other design aspects to ensure cost-effectiveness. Extensive expertise in MIL-STD-882E, DO178, DO254, software development, and systems engineering is required.

This position can be located in Huntsville, Alabama or Roy, Utah, with a competitive relocation package possible.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree, 3 years with a Master's, 1 year with a Doctorate in science, engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, aeronautics, safety, or related fields.
  • Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance within the last 6 years.
  • Ability to successfully undergo Enhanced Security Clearance screening.
  • At least 1 year experience with DO-178 or DO-254 for design development.
  • At least 1 year experience with C/C++, Java, or similar software development.
  • At least 1 year experience using MIL-STD-882E for hazard analysis.
  • Strong communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using MIL-STD-882E for hardware/software design development.
  • Leadership in software safety processes during engineering and manufacturing phases.
  • Experience in Agile environments, Model-Based Systems Engineering, missile flight systems software, or safety certifications like ASP or CSP.
  • Active Top Secret clearance with recent investigation.

Salary range: $95,300 - $142,900, based on experience and qualifications.
