Job description

Sensing Hardware Test - Electrical Engineer

Cupertino, California, United States

Summary

Sensing technology empowers Apple products with revolutionary features, such as Touch ID, Face ID and Camera Control Button. The Sensing Hardware Test team is responsible for the research, design and development of various metrology solutions, from technology characterization in the laboratory to mass production manufacturing. This team is seeking an extraordinary engineer with a deep understanding of the physics behind sensing hardware and electrical engineering principles. This candidate will have the opportunity to explore the latest sensing technology and deploy novel test infrastructure for the mass production of the next Apple product.

Description

In this role, you will:

  • Work with multi-functional teams to define the test methodology for various sensing hardware.
  • Author test engineering requirement documents.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-functional teams to develop test solutions that are mechanically, electrically, and software integrated.
  • Debug issues across the hardware-software boundary and support on‑site system bring‑up at manufacturing sites.
  • Work with both the internal team and external vendors to optimize test systems to meet Apple’s quality standards for high‑volume production.
  • Deliver executive‑level summaries and presentations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience in electrical system development for hardware testing, instrumentation, or embedded systems and ability to develop complex algorithms for signal processing or control.
  • Proficient in C/C++ and Python, with hands‑on experience triaging electrical systems.
  • Strong understanding of common electronic instrumentation and communication protocols (e.g., DMMs, oscilloscope, UART, I2C, SPI, Ethernet).
  • BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with sensor technologies (e.g., Touch, Force, Actuation, Optics) and their testing challenges.
  • Exposure to AI/ML frameworks (e.g., scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and deploying models in production.
  • Experience designing robust, scalable test solutions for high‑throughput production environments.
  • Proven ability to collaborate multi‑functionally with electrical, mechanical, and software teams.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel to Apple and supplier facilities.
  • Experience collaborating with external vendors to integrate test solutions.
  • Background in instrumentation design, real‑time systems, or test automation platforms.
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, or a related field.
Pay & Benefits

Base pay for this role ranges from $147,400 to $272,100, depending on skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, can purchase Apple stock at a discount via the Employee Stock Purchase Plan, and may receive discretionary bonuses or commissions.
