Job summary

HDR, Inc. seeks a senior engineer to join the Washington Water Business Group in Spokane. The role partners with multidisciplinary teams to deliver municipal water and wastewater infrastructure across the region and beyond.

You will lead design and delivery of pipelines, pump stations, treatment plants and related facilities, supervise staff, mentor junior engineers, and ensure QA/QC throughout the project life cycle, while maintaining strong client relations and project budgeting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent field.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience with municipal water and wastewater systems planning and design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Strong technical background in designing water distribution systems.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation and hydraulic modeling software.
  • Project engineering and project management experience is necessary.
  • Commitment to an active participation in the company’s employee‑owned culture.

  • Create detailed designs, plans, specs and estimates for wastewater infrastructure.
  • Lead planning, evaluation, and design of wastewater treatment projects.
  • Oversee project delivery from start to finish and ensure quality.
  • Mentor junior staff and communicate with teams.

Overview

As part of HDR's Washington Water Business Group, the Wastewater team supports the planning, design, and delivery of water/wastewater treatment and associated municipal projects. In this senior engineer role you will partner with multidisciplinary teams to deliver impactful public infrastructure projects across the region and country.

Responsibilities
  • Direct and coordinate work of single or multidisciplinary teams throughout the project life cycle, from development and initiation to close‑out.
  • Manage large multi-disciplinary projects or medium‑sized projects with high technical complexity, involving large project staff.
  • Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently.
  • Establish and maintain client relations and participate in marketing, contractual, design and production meetings.
  • Conduct work sessions for deliverable development with staff and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate staffing and workload through the entire project life cycle, ensuring completion of deliverables on schedule.
  • Track financial aspects of projects and adjust work effort with the team to stay within agreed‑to budget and schedule.
  • Work with Accounting, Operations and Business leadership for periodic project reviews.
  • Implement QA/QC procedures.
  • Supervise large project staffs and mentor less‑experienced Project Managers.
  • Independently create detailed designs, plans, specifications and estimates for pipelines, pump stations, treatment plants, tanks and other wastewater infrastructure.
  • Lead planning, evaluation, and design of wastewater treatment process projects as design or technical lead.
  • Oversee delivery of projects from start to finish, stewarding quality throughout.
  • Provide oversight and mentoring for junior staff.
  • Plan work, communicate with project resources and teams.
  • Maintain client relationships through project work.
  • Establish quality standards and value engineering solutions.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of designs.
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in wastewater systems.
  • Serve as a project manager on water/wastewater projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent field.
  • PMP certification.
  • Strong technical background and experience in wastewater treatment processes and project delivery.
  • Project engineering and project management experience.
