Job summary

HDR is seeking a Senior Engineer Sanitary in the Water Business Group in Colorado. You will design water and wastewater systems, manage projects, and ensure high-quality deliverables for municipalities.

You will lead design efforts, coordinate with owners, and apply engineering standards while shaping sustainable water infrastructure. This role requires PE licensure and extensive municipal experience in water utilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with Municipal Water and Wastewater Systems Planning and Design.
  • Professional engineer (PE or equivalent) license recognized by the relevant board.
  • Strong technical background in designing water distribution systems.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation and hydraulic modeling software.
  • Project engineering and project management experience.
  • Commitment to employee-owned culture.

Responsibilities

  • Independently create detailed designs, plans, specifications and estimates for pipelines, pump stations, treatment plants, tanks and other water and wastewater storage and conveyance systems.
  • Manage engineering/process design, coordinate projects, write specifications, plan work, and size equipment while coordinating with owners.
  • Establish new quality standards and value engineering solutions.
  • Perform quality control reviews of completed designs.
  • Serve as a technical expert in water and wastewater systems and lead as needed on projects.
  • Act as project manager on water/wastewater projects as required.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Position Overview

In the role of Senior Engineer Sanitary within HDR’s Water Business Group, you will help shape how communities manage water for generations to come, creating safe drinking water, treating wastewater, developing sustainable water supplies, and protecting lives through flood control. Your work supports public health, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure resilience.

Responsibilities
  • Independently create detailed designs, plans, specifications and estimates for pipelines, pump stations, treatment plants, tanks and other water and wastewater storage and conveyance systems
  • Take responsibility for engineering/process design, project coordination, determining and writing engineering specifications, planning work, establishing appropriate design methods, report preparation and coordination, equipment sizing and selection, and working directly with the owner
  • Establish new quality standards and value engineering solutions
  • Conduct quality control reviews of completed designs
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in the area of water and wastewater systems
  • Serve as a project manager on water/wastewater projects as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent field
  • A minimum of 10 years experience with Municipal Water and Wastewater Systems Planning and Design
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license)
  • Strong technical background and experience in designing water distribution systems
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MicroStation and hydraulic modeling software
  • Project Engineering and Project Management experience is necessary

Benefits and Compensation

Expected compensation range: $109,858.00 - $156,940.00 (Colorado). Benefit package includes medical, dental, vision, short and long‑term disability, life insurance, employee assistance program, paid time away, parental leave, paid holidays, retirement savings plan with employer match, employee referral bonus and tuition reimbursement. Only full‑time regular positions are eligible for the full benefits package.
