Job summary

ISG in Des Moines, IA is seeking a Senior Water/Wastewater Engineer to lead complex municipal and industrial projects across the United States. You will oversee planning, design, and execution of water and wastewater treatment facilities, storage, pumping, and distribution systems, coordinating with clients, regulatory agencies, and project teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) required.
  • 10+ years of hands-on design and drafting experience in water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Strong problem-solving and leadership capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and multitasking skills to keep projects moving.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects in water and wastewater; evaluate, plan, and implement system operations.
  • Assess treatment technologies using data analysis and testing.
  • Diagnose and improve existing system operations and drive improvements.
  • Forecast future capital and operational needs for long-range planning.
  • Develop conceptual and detailed engineering plans for construction-ready solutions.
  • Support construction, startup, troubleshooting, and field operations.
  • Perform field observations and data collection to inform decisions.
  • Prepare permit submittals ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with communities and stakeholders to define project needs.

ISG is looking to add a Senior Water/Wastewater Engineer to our dynamic engineering team. As a Senior Water/Wastewater Engineer, you will make a real difference for Municipal and Industrial clients across the U.S., contributing to projects that improve lives and communities. We are a full-service, multi-disciplinary team, who perform award winning work in planning, design, survey, and construction.

Department: Water/Wastewater

Location: Des Moines, IA

Compensation: $70,000 - $190,000 / year

Essential Duties
  • Lead with Impact - take charge of projects or contribute individually to help clients evaluate, plan, and implement water, wastewater, and reuse system operations
  • Conduct treatment technology assessments using data analysis, mass balance calculations, modeling, bench and pilot testing
  • Diagnose existing system operations, troubleshoot issues, and drive process improvements
  • Support long-range planning by assessing current systems and forecasting future capital and operational needs
  • Perform studies and alternative analyses to identify optimal treatment solutions that align with compliance and client goals
  • Design with Purpose - develop conceptual and detailed engineering plans and specifications for construction-ready solutions
  • Assist with construction, system start-up, troubleshooting, and operational support for new installations
  • Conduct field observations, inspections, and data collection to inform project decisions
  • Prepare permit submittals for water and wastewater projects, ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Work closely with team members, communities, and stakeholders to define project needs and deliver impactful results
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed, contributing to a dynamic and evolving team environment

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE), required
  • 10+ years of hands‑on experience in the design and drafting of water and wastewater infrastructure, including treatment facilities, groundwater wells, storage systems, distribution networks, pumping stations, collection systems, and lift stations
  • Strong command of water and wastewater engineering principles, with a knack for solving complex challenges
  • Experience in team building and leadership is a plus—we’re looking for someone who can inspire and guide others
  • Exceptional multitasking, organizational, and communication skills to keep projects moving and stakeholders informed
