Job description

Senior Water Resources Engineer

Our Riverscapes and Shorelines Team is actively seeking a Senior Water Resources Engineer to support and deliver projects across a broad spectrum of complexities, primarily focused on water resources, wetland, and riverine systems.

Location

Candidate should reside within approximately 45 minutes of our Northern California offices (San Rafael, Petaluma, or Emeryville). Remote positions within California or Oregon may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis. Field site visits may be required during design development and construction.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead and conduct river restoration‑related design projects
  • Collaborate with senior staff to propose and secure work with existing and new clients
  • Train and mentor staff with diverse skill sets and backgrounds
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Perform hydrologic analysis using HEC‑HMS, TR‑55, SWMM, or similar software
  • Perform hydraulic analysis using HEC‑RAS, MIKE, FHWA SMS, HY‑8, Hydraulic Toolbox, or comparable tools
  • Develop construction documents, including plans, specifications, and cost estimates for water resources projects
  • Operate AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiently
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to water resources and environmental protection
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 15 years of professional experience in civil, agricultural, or environmental engineering with a focus on water resources
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, agricultural, environmental engineering, or a related field emphasizing water resources
  • Professional Civil Engineering license in California; ability to obtain licensure in Oregon and other states as needed
  • Familiarity with natural systems and a thorough understanding of river restoration
  • Physical capability to walk on rough, sloped terrain and possession of a valid driver’s license for field visits and construction observations
  • Strong collaborative skills, working effectively with remote coworkers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with FEMA Floodplain Development (CLOMR/LOMR) permitting; Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) certification preferred
  • Graduate degree in engineering or physical sciences
  • Advanced training in stream restoration, sediment transport modeling, and watershed master planning
  • Business development and project management experience
Salary and Compensation

The salary range for this position is $125,000 – $161,000, based on level and experience. Compensation discussions will occur early in the interview process, and title adjustments will be considered to align with the appropriate level.
