Job summary

City of Chicago Department of Water Management is seeking a Managing Engineer-Water Management to lead the Bureau of Engineering Services and manage the capital improvement program. This senior role directs planning, records, and design review for sewer projects, ensuring accurate documentation and timely delivery.

The successful candidate will oversee engineering staff, coordinate green infrastructure initiatives, and collaborate with state and local agencies on stormwater best practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil, Mechanical, Structural Engineering or related field.
• Four years of supervisory experience in the planning, design and construction management of engineering projects.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required in Illinois.
• Valid State of Illinois driver’s license required at time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Lead planner for sewer system, coordinating planning and record management.
• Direct staff of engineers in design, planning and preparation of specifications and construction documents.
• Direct record management and archiving related to sewer infrastructure.
• Provide design reviews, project scope, design criteria, cost estimates and timelines.
• Prioritize capital improvement projects based on funding, conditions, and needs.
• Incorporate green infrastructure to improve stormwater management.
• Evaluate street vacations and subdivisions for sewer impact.
• Coordinate with hydrologic/hydraulic staff on projects addressing flooding.
• Represent the department with agencies on best practices for stormwater management.
• Direct field studies to assess hydraulic performance of water distribution and proper operations.
• Maintain sewer distribution system hydraulic model for analysis and sizing.
• Use GIS to coordinate utilities and minimize disruption.
• Perform other related duties as required.
