Job summary

City of Chicago's Water Management Department seeks a Managing Engineer-Water Management to lead the Bureau’s capital improvement plan and supervise the design, planning, and record management of sewer projects. This senior role reports to the Chief Engineer of Sewers and shapes city-wide water infrastructure and stormwater strategies.

The job requires a PE license in Illinois, a civil/related engineering degree, and at least four years of supervisory experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural Engineering or related field.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required in Illinois.
• A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Lead planner for sewer system, coordinating engineers and staff in planning and record management.
• Directs engineers in design, planning and preparation of specifications and construction documents for sewer projects.
• Directs record management and maintains records pertaining to sewer infrastructure and projects.
• Provides design review and approves project scope, design criteria, specifications, cost estimates and timelines.
• Confers with management to select, schedule and prioritise capital improvement projects based on funding and needs.
• Provides technical expertise and recommends green infrastructure to improve stormwater management.
• Evaluates street vacations and subdivision developments for sewer impact and expansion needs.
• Directs planning with hydrologic and hydraulic staff to identify projects addressing flooding.
• Represents the department with state/local agencies on best practices for green initiatives and stormwater management.
• Directs field studies to assess hydraulic performance and ensure proper system operations.
• Maintains and uses sewer hydraulic model to analyze operations and sizing.
• Uses GIS to coordinate utilities and minimize digging/restoration in public way.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering or related field

Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (Illinois)
