Job description

NIP Group www.nipgroup.com is a rapidly growing insurance service provider of specialty programs for commercial insurance brokers and carriers providing underwriting, distribution, product management, administration, and risk management services primarily by acting as a managing underwriter (MGA) and a Reciprocal Services Manager (RSM).

Founded in 1987 and still founder-owned and led, NIP Group builds insurance for organizations that could not find coverage designed for the unique demands of their industries — from tree care and landscaping to utility contractors, growers, and pool builders. Our National Programs Division writes a broad, multi-line, primarily casualty book (General Liability lead, Commercial Auto, and Workers’ Compensation in the core, plus umbrella/excess, property, inland marine, and specialty lines including wildfire liability) across 15+ programs and 25+ industries in 48 states. The platform is backed by long-term, risk-bearing capacity partners underwriting off their own balance sheets — AXA XL (since 2017), AmTrust (since 2008), and SiriusPoint (since 2024) — supported by leading reinsurers. NIP is privately held with no private-equity clock and no quarterly earnings cycle: capital decisions are made on a five-to-ten-year view by an owner who intends to hold permanently.

Our culture is one that empowers and encourages employees to be innovative, collaborative, and forward-thinking. If you are interested in being a part of a growing, entrepreneurial spirited organization, we’d love to hear from you!

About the Position

We have an exciting opportunity for an accomplished underwriting executive to join us as Senior Vice President, Underwriting. This is the chief underwriting seat of a national specialty MGA — and a planned succession: our current senior underwriting leader retires at the end of 2026, and NIP is ready to move now, with time for a genuine transition. You will inherit a working platform to improve, not a rebuild, and serve as the underwriting technical partner to a commercially minded division President — two leaders, one P&L.

This is your chance to own a portfolio-management mandate, not a referral desk: grow the business without compromising underwriting profitability — the right risk, price, limits, terms, concentrations, mix, and portfolio. One portfolio, 15+ specialty programs, 48 states, and every underwriting authority grant on the platform flows from this seat. You’ll own both the profitability and the growth of the book — correcting deteriorating segments early, on leading indicators, while accelerating strong ones with confidence. The standard is growth and discipline together — judged on how the book develops, not on how a quarter prints. If you’re ready to elevate your career and take on a role where your underwriting judgment shapes how a national specialty platform grows, we want to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Vice President, Underwriting to join our team, responsibilities include:

Profitability & Growth of the Book:

  • Own the profitability AND the growth of the Specialty Programs book as a single P&L — accountable for both combined-ratio-to-carrier and profitable premium growth, not one at the expense of the other.
  • Use the breadth of the portfolio to optimize, remediate, and grow segments simultaneously: correct deteriorating segments while accelerating profitable ones, managing the complex transmission of growth across lines, states, and classes without eroding margin or capacity.
  • Own target portfolio mix and active rebalancing by line, segment, class, state, account size, and limit/attachment — managing rate adequacy and mix to target across the whole book, segment by segment, and acting on deteriorating segments ahead of developed losses (proactive push / hold / shed / grow).

Technical & Market Pricing:

  • Own both technical pricing (loss-cost, rate adequacy, rating-plan architecture, segmentation/tiering) and market pricing (competitive position, price-to-demand, conversion and retention by price point) — and manage the tension between them by segment.
  • Partner with actuarial and data science across pricing, reserving, and analytics to build, validate, deploy, and monitor predictive models; own model governance, lift/Gini monitoring, and the underwriting-to-model feedback loop.
  • Operate a signal-management system using leading indicators, large-loss early warnings, telematics/third-party data, and actual-vs-expected (AvE) tracking.
  • Own limits management and the smart use of reinsurance and carrier programs to protect and expand capacity — structuring the book so growth is supported by, and stays within, available treaty capacity, while deepening carrier and reinsurer relationships and adding capacity to fund the next stage of growth.
  • Set and monitor concentration and aggregation limits — Auto fleet & radius, GL class/products, WC state/class — against capacity and treaty terms.
  • Manage the book to carrier appetite and treaty terms; own the underwriting side of capacity relationships — audit performance, binding-authority compliance, and profit-commission / sliding-scale triggers.

Enterprise Strategy & Growth:

  • Serve as the underwriting voice in evaluating new program launches and new-state/new-line expansion — assessing loss-cost, capacity, and portfolio-fit implications before commitments are made.
  • Partner with the President and executive leadership on where the company should grow next, bringing underwriting economics into strategic decisions rather than being handed a mandate after the fact.

Governance, Talent & Product:

  • Maintain underwriting philosophy, guidelines, authority structure, and quality review — identifying training needs and developing underwriting talent within a unified organization with clear authority, standards, and career paths.
  • Own underwriting audit governance and QA — design and enforce the audit framework, track quality scores by underwriter and program, and drive corrective action on findings to protect underwriting margin and carrier confidence.
  • Develop product and coverage enhancements with Actuarial, Claims, Legal, and Regulatory; maintain competitive and marketplace awareness.
What We’re Looking For
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in commercial P&C insurance, with 8+ years of underwriting leadership.
  • Demonstrated multi-line casualty portfolio P&L ownership (GL, Commercial Auto, WC) — you have owned a loss ratio and a growth number together, not just an authority framework.
  • Pricing and predictive-modeling fluency — comfortable directing and challenging actuaries on loss development, actual-vs-expected emergence, and model performance.
  • Program / MGA / delegated-authority experience, with reinsurance and treaty literacy.
  • Multi-state regulatory navigation, including workers’ compensation bureau dynamics.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fully remote environment — Eastern or Central time zone preferred, near a major airport.
  • What is NOT required: prior experience in NIP’s niche industries. Deep end-market expertise lives in the program teams — this seat requires portfolio, pricing, and capacity leadership, and we will teach you trees.
What You'll Receive

At NIP Group, we recognize there are many factors that contribute to your overall satisfaction both at work, and in your personal life. For that reason, we provide a perfect mix of compensation, benefits, company culture, and resources to ensure your everyday happiness. Below are some benefits that you’ll receive.

  • Progressive Paid-Time Off program for you to enjoy time out of the office, including time off for volunteering and life events, plus holidays and summer hours.
  • Group Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Short-Term Disability insurance to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
  • 401(k) with employer match to invest in your future.
  • Pretax Health and Dependent Care Spending Accounts to ease taxes on spending.
  • Discounts in retail and entertainment.
