Description

The Senior Veterinary Technician under minimal supervision, monitors the health and well-being of all animals within multiple facilities, including but not limited to, nonhuman primates, swine, sheep, ferrets, mink, rabbits, and rodent species. The SVT serves as the floater to provide both small and large animal support in the clinical space. SVT provides surgical support, including pre-, intra- and postoperative care, involving all species. The SVT, upon the advice of the veterinarian, administers or schedules treatments to ill or injured animals or for preventive purposes.


Responsibilities
  • Administer medications and treatments to laboratory animals according to a prescribed protocol.
  • Provide care to animals on clinical rounds.
  • Provide surgical support, including pre-, intra- and postoperative care.
  • Conduct standard sterile operating room procedures ensuring all instruments and materials are appropriately prepared and available for use.
  • Assist veterinarian and researchers with surgical procedures and tests.
  • Maintain records on anesthetics, post-operative and clinical rounds according to protocol.
  • Assist with cleaning, organizing, and re-stocking the Operating Room area and all surgical suites.
  • Assist with Operating Room and surgical suite equipment maintenance and operation.
  • Ensure staff and laboratory personnel are compliant with all regulatory agencies.
  • Assist the veterinarians and the training coordinator in developing, organizing, and participating in hands-on and didactic training modules.
  • Coordinate imports and exports of rodent species including live animals and frozen embryos/gametes, communicating with donating and receiving institutions to organize animals including facility and health information necessary for animal shipments.
  • Oversee and maintain the rodent sentinel and quarantine programs, including ordering sentinel animals and coordinating health testing and submitting animals or samples with accompanying requisitions to the Comparative Pathology Lab.
  • May assist with billing and charges for veterinary services.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Qualifications

5+ years closely related experience with animals, preferably in a laboratory research setting, or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $41.5867 - $44.8085 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need.
