Job summary

Gloucester County Public Utilities Department seeks a Senior Utility Maintenance Technician to lead a crew in repairing and replacing water mains and waterlines. The role uses diverse procedures, hand tools, and heavy equipment to maintain, repair, and install water and sewer lines and related equipment.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, five years of related experience, and a valid CDL Class A.

Qualifications

• Five years of progressively responsible and directly related experience.
• CDL with Class A endorsement required.
• Must pass post-offer, pre-employment physical examination.

Responsibilities

• Lead worker on assigned crew repairing and replacing water mains and waterlines.
• Operate vehicles/equipment (dump trucks, trailers, etc.) and use various procedures and heavy machinery.
• Read water meters, locate leaks, and manage valve operations.
• Oversee installation of pipes and fittings and inspect systems.
• Respond to after-hours calls and perform preventive maintenance.

The Senior Utility Maintenance Technician serves as lead worker on an assigned crew performing specialized semi-skilled work repairing and replacing water mains and waterlines.

Work involves using a variety of procedures, hand equipment, and heavy machinery to maintain, repair and install water and sewer lines and associated equipment.

Position reports to the Utility Foreman.

• Serves as lead worker on assigned crew.
• Operates a variety of vehicles/equipment (dump trucks, trailers, etc.).
• Installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs water and sewer lines.
• Responds to trouble calls regarding leaks, breaks, low pressure, and water quality/clarity.
• Reads water meters; searches for leaks; activates or deactivates meters according to work orders.
• Oversees installation of pipes and fittings into excavated ditch.
• Repairs manholes.
• Exercises fire hydrants, valves, and air release valves.
• Operates sewer cleaning machines and vehicles.
• Responds to after-hours calls on nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Performs general and preventive maintenance of equipment.
• Performs general maintenance of utility building and grounds.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Possession of a high school diploma/GED.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related experience.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Class A endorsement; possess and maintain a driving record that meets established Gloucester County Driving Standards.
Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination. Position subject to subsequent physical examinations to ensure incumbent meets physical job requirements.
