Job summary

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, located in Long Beach, seeks an experienced University Counsel to serve as the principal lawyer for one or more CSU campuses and for systemwide matters. The position involves advising on complex legal issues and collaborating with campus leadership.

The role offers a hybrid work arrangement with two telecommute days per week and three days on-site at the Long Beach headquarters, with in-person work on dates at management’s discretion.

Qualifications

• Admission to the California State Bar; graduation from an ABA accredited law school.
• Minimum of five years of practice.
• Superior verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to develop and implement effective strategies for handling complex University legal issues.
• Statewide travel will be required.

Responsibilities

• Communicate directly with clients, supervisors, and colleagues in the Office of General Counsel.
• Provide full-spectrum legal advice to assigned campuses and work with litigation counsel on trial and settlement strategy.
• Provide timely updates to the General Counsel on significant matters.
• Acquire and maintain expertise in specialized subject areas to serve as an office resource.
• Provide and coordinate legal services to assigned campuses and manage litigation; coordinate with others with expertise.
• Develop good communication with campus Presidents and administrators and understand campus priorities.
• Contribute to the mission of the office and be prepared to take on additional responsibilities as needed.
