This is an exciting opportunity for a strategic thinker and compliance champion to shape the future of Medical Professional Liability (MPL) underwriting at a company committed to innovation and excellence in healthcare risk. We are seeking a seasoned Senior Underwriter with deep expertise in MPL, particularly in Patient Compensation Fund (PCF) states and other nuanced regulatory environments, to play a key role in ensuring underwriting decisions are aligned with state-specific compliance requirements. This role will focus on complex and emerging risk scenarios, with a strategic emphasis on establishing and maintaining best practices for compliance. We need a forward-thinking professional who combines strong analytical skills, underwriting judgment, and regulatory insight to support the profitable growth of our client, a dynamic organization with a fluid environment.

The Opportunity

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

  • Analyze, evaluate, and underwrite new and renewal MPL risks for client.
  • Assess complex opportunities and apply sound underwriting judgment in line with company guidelines.

Compliance Leadership
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on state-specific MPL regulations, including PCF programs (e.g., Indiana, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin).
  • Establish and document underwriting best practices to ensure compliance with PCF and other jurisdictional requirements.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and develop responsive strategies and workflows.

Strategic Process Development
  • Develop and implement underwriting protocols and checklists tailored to unique insurance scenarios and high-risk states.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Claims, and Actuarial teams to address emerging issues.

Internal Training & Guidance
  • Mentor underwriting specialists and provide technical guidance on underwriting complex risks.
  • Deliver training sessions on compliance, documentation, and unique underwriting nuances.

Operational Excellence
  • Maintain complete and accurate underwriting files with thorough documentation of underwriting rationale and regulatory considerations.
  • Support internal audits and participate in corrective action plans related to compliance findings.

Required Experience and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree; advanced degree or professional designation (e.g., RPLU, CPCU) preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in Medical Professional Liability underwriting or compliance.
  • Deep understanding of PCF programs and regulatory frameworks in states such as Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare industry risk exposures, policy forms, and rating methodologies.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems and tools; experience with policy administration platforms is a plus.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead initiatives, manage complex workflows, and work independently or collaboratively across departments and within a hybrid or virtual work environment.
  • Strong customer and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to stay organized and flexible in a work environment with multiple assignments and changing priorities.
  • Proficiency with standard office equipment and remote working tools (i.e., digital camera, phone systems, etc.).
  • Expertise in Windows personal computer environment and computer software skills (including internet browsers, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
  • Aptitude for learning new software and systems with appropriate training.
  • Ability to comply with the terms of our policies in protecting confidential and organizational information.

We are excited to share the base salary range for this position is$98,700 - $120,000 annually, exclusive of fringe benefits or potential bonuses.If you are hired, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, and/or experience. We believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.This is a primarily remote role with some in-person attendance required at our Walnut Creek, CA office. Travel expenses will be covered by the company for out-of-area employees.
