Job summary

Sentara Health Plans is seeking a Senior Underwriter to underwrite employer groups of high complexity and to lead strategic rating decisions that balance competitiveness and profitability. This role applies deep expertise in claims analysis, actuarial concepts, and both Fully Insured and Self-Funded underwriting, with strong collaboration across Sales, Actuarial and Leadership.

You will mentor underwriters and trainees, support high-profile cases and RFPs, and contribute to process improvement,

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.
• 7+ years underwriting experience required.
• Health plan experience preferred.
• Experience with Fully Insured and Self-Funded underwriting.

Overview

The Senior Underwriter is responsible for underwriting employer groups of high complexity and leading strategic rating decisions that balance competitiveness and profitability. This role applies deep expertise in claims analysis, actuarial concepts, and funding arrangements, including proficiency in both Fully Insured and Self-Funded underwriting, as well as market dynamics, to develop sound pricing with limited or complex data. The Senior Underwriter serves as a mentor and subject‑matter expert for Underwriters and Trainees, supports high-profile cases and RFPs, and collaborates with Sales, Actuarial, and Leadership. This position also contributes to process improvement, training development, and underwriting strategy.

Compensation

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $95,139.20 - $142,084.80 annually. Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, on-call pay, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs. Note: If an annual salary is posted, it is based on a full-time colleague working 2,080 hours annually.
