Job Summary

The Senior Underwriter for Northeast National Brokerage (NNB) will review applications for petroleum distribution insurance and determine acceptance or declination based on underwriting guidelines, set coverage levels and pricing based on exposures and risk characteristics, assess excessive risks, and ensure profitable distribution of risks.

Position Responsibilities
  • Adhere to underwriting guidelines and pricing strategies to maintain profitability; use authority to accept, reject, or mitigate risk for applications.
  • Approve or decline insurance applications within limits and issue coverage; prepare referrals for risks exceeding authority.
  • Review and analyze risk characteristics on applications, renewals, and change requests for distribution of all classes of fuel including propane, heating oil, gas, and diesel to residences, gas stations and more across the US.
  • Ensure underwriting activities comply with industry and government regulations.
  • Document underwriting files with risk analysis and pricing justification.
  • Offer recommendations to clients to reduce exposure to excessive risk.
  • Utilize guidelines to accept, reject, or mitigate risk and determine premiums, limits, and coverages.
  • Cultivate relationships with producers to achieve production goals.
  • Collaborate with the underwriting team to finalize applications efficiently.
  • Use databases and specialized software to gather data, compare risks, and ensure accurate pricing.
  • Respond to customer needs with guidance and assistance tailored to their insurance needs.
  • Process accounts from quotes to policy issuance with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Suggest ideas for program development and process improvement.
  • Support the development of the Underwriting team through knowledge sharing and mentoring.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial P&C underwriting or related insurance experience.
  • Experience underwriting commercial E&S policies.
  • Experience underwriting excess petroleum policies (strongly preferred).
  • Experience working for an MGA (preferred).
  • Experience using Vertafore, AIM and ImageRight (a plus).
  • CPCU, Property & Casualty License, etc. (a plus).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn industry-specific software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and other departments.
  • Strong desire to learn, explore new ideas, and seek knowledge.
  • Ability to be flexible, embrace change, and pivot with shifting priorities.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting annual pay scale is based on skills, qualifications, training, and experience. National pay range: $91,300 - $113,300 USD. ISC offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with match; paid time off; and other benefits. Salary ranges are determined by role and level and may vary by location and factors.
