Job description

Role Overview

Make underwriting recommendations and decisions to protect the financial assets of the company and the carrier. Review proposal requests to evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing. Establish, maintain, and develop producer relationships and work with expanded underwriting authority and business development responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meet annual company goals for profitability, renewal retention, revenue growth, new business production, and customer service standards.
  • Evaluate risk acceptability within established guidelines and set appropriate rates and factor levels.
  • Analyze proposed plan changes for acceptability and cost.
  • Work with the Sales department to follow up on quoted cases.
  • Communicate with third‑party administrators, brokers, and other external parties to explain decisions, address issues, and maintain productive relationships.
  • Collaborate with management, internal departments, and other parties to respond to customer needs and deliver exceptional customer experiences.
  • Complete requests for proposals (RFPs) promptly and track status and competitive information.
  • Train and mentor Underwriters and other internal and external personnel as assigned.
  • Travel to visit external and internal stakeholders for growth and business development as needed.
  • Participate in and complete projects and other activities as assigned.
  • Engage in leadership and growth programs when nominated or assigned.
What You Bring
  • 4‑year bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant and progressive professional experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Medical Stop Loss underwriting.
  • Strategic thinking, anticipation, proactivity, and relationship‑building skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans of benefits, bid specifications, claim reports, and procedural manuals.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in the insurance industry.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Strong critical thinking, negotiating, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Teams).
  • Collaboration skills and ability to work in a highly team‑oriented environment.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn.
  • Preferred certifications: Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), or Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
  • Preferred experience with Young Consulting’s ESLOffice or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
