The LA County Board of Supervisors recently declared a local state of emergency for homelessness, and the County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use. The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Typist-Clerk vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%. Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Senior-Typist Clerk.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Types and processes court orders, minutes, petitions, and other legal documents requiring the analysis of complex source material and familiarity with various legal codes.
  2. Answers questions requiring searching for and abstracting technical data and detailed explanation of laws, policies, or procedures.
  3. Checks legal documents for form, validity, and compliance with legal requirements.
  4. Makes statistical computations and analyses, estimates of fees, etc.
  5. Advises employees on problems within jurisdiction and makes permissible decisions.
  6. Reviews work of others for accuracy and conformity to established procedures.
  7. Makes final checks of permits, authorizations, etc.
  8. Prepares correspondence requiring specialized knowledge and discrimination in data selection.
  9. Supervises a small section or unit engaged in related work.
  10. Routinely accesses office equipment to input data, perform computations, or produce documents.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Three years office clerical experience involving typewriting, one year of which must have been in a specialized capacity.

Typewriting Skill Requirement: Ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute.

NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE OR VERIFICATION OF EXPERIENCE LETTERS (VOEL) WILL BE ACCEPTED.

PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class II – Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort.

EXAMINATION CONTENT: Applicants must pass a typing test at a minimum of 40 words per minute.

IMPORTANT TYPING TEST INFORMATION: Applicants who have not taken a typing test administered by the Los Angeles County can apply to the "Typing Test-Score Banking Only" announcement bulletin.
