Job Description And Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer, of Office of Construction Engineering Management, the Senior Transportation Engineer is responsible for field material testing and acceptance tests of all construction projects throughout District 7.

Manages and directs the technical testing of soils,aggregates, asphalt concrete (lime treated and untreated), Portland Cement Concrete and base materials. These tests include all California test methods and other test methods (American Concrete Institutes (ACI)) list of American Society of Testing Material (ASTM) test methods and American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) utilized at the District Materials Laboratory necessary to perform mix design for asphalt concrete pavement and Portland Cement Concrete Pavement and for Geotechnical analysis of soils.

The incumbent will be required to commute and make frequent construction job site reviews. Construction job sites are typically located adjacent to freeway/highway traffic.

While at their base of operation, incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Incumbent may also be required to travel and work outdoors and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement of Qualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process.

  • Experience in leading and supervising staff. Knowledgeable in departmental personnel policies related to employee supervision and protection. In-depth knowledge of material testing policies and procedures, including those from the American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), as well as departmental and district policies and guidelines.
  • Effective Communication
  • Experience with communicating to staff and dealing with difficult internal and external customers. Organizational and Collaborative Skills
  • Demonstrate your ability to effectively organize work priorities, meet project deadlines, and adapt to evolving responsibilities. Skilled in fostering and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
