Job description

Do you have experience overseeing innovative programs or projects related to clean energy, clean transportation, and/or electric power systems? California Energy Commission (CEC) is hiring a Senior Transportation Electrification Specialist in the Energy Systems & Transportation Branch (ESTB) of the Energy Research & Development Division (ERDD).

The Senior Transportation Electrification Specialist will provide technical leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) and other activities related to transportation electrification, vehicle-grid integration, and zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure. This opportunity is an Electric Generation System Program Specialist II (EGSPS II) state classification.

ESTB supports the development of emerging technologies to enable a clean, reliable, and affordable energy system. The Transportation Unit within ESTB is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of RDD&D efforts focused on innovations that support transportation electrification, vehicle-grid integration, and the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

Energy Research & Development Division (ERDD) deploys over $200 million annually to advance technology innovation and research supporting the state’s clean energy and climate goals, including in the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Substantial knowledge of research, planning, and policy development around transportation electrification, vehicle-grid integration, and zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure.
  • Ability to analyze and assess innovative vehicle-grid integration technologies and policy frameworks; standards and practices governing deployment and operation of electric vehicle chargers and related electrical infrastructure; and electric grid planning processes and methodologies for transportation electrification.
  • Familiarity with electricity system planning and operation.
  • Ability to provide expert consultative services on the feasibility, impact, or potential of a variety of decisions affecting programs, projects, and proposals.
  • Ability to manage complex energy research, development, demonstration, and deployment projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work within a diverse team environment.
  • Ability to evaluate data and develop alternatives or recommendations based on findings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work activities, and deliver high-quality, timely work products.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and prepare clear, concise, complete, and technically accurate reports, presentations, and correspondence.
  • Ability to review and communicate complicated information in a simple, public-friendly manner.
  • Experience working with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and other applications.
