Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a seasoned transmission line engineer to design lines from 69kV to 500kV, assess costs, and develop criteria for routing and siting. The role includes coordinating with vendors and clients, plus occasional travel for site visits and meetings.

Qualifications include an ABET‑accredited engineering degree and 7+ years in design, with proficiency in PLS‑CADD and related tools, plus strong MS Office skills and communication abilities. A relocation package may be offered.

Qualifications

  • BS degree from an ABET‑accredited engineering program.
  • Proficiency with PLS‑CADD software to review transmission line models.
  • 7+ years of experience in transmission line design, cost estimate development, scheduling, specification preparation, procurement, construction coordination, and liaison with construction teams.
  • Knowledge to verify and review right‑of‑way requirements, conductor sag/tension calculations, plan and profile drawings, and construction documents.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for engineering calculations.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of spending three days a week in the office, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days. Dependent on your location, this opportunity offers a generous relocation package.

Responsibilities and Opportunities
  • Design transmission lines in the 69kV to 500kV range.
  • Conduct cost analyses, develop design criteria, and manage routing and siting of transmission lines.
  • Perform conductor selection studies, shielding, grounding, and induction studies.
  • Work with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
  • Work with a diverse client base and interact with the client and other project teams.
  • Travel occasionally for site visits and client meetings.
  • Develop proposals and cost estimates for new work.
Work Environment

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of spending three days a week in the office and two days remote. A generous relocation package may be offered depending on location.

Valued but Not Required Skills and Experience
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to acquire one within one year.
  • Experience in developing engineering proposals and cost estimates.
  • Experience with scheduling.
  • Proficiency with PLS‑TOWER, SAG10, LPILE, MFAD, ArcGIS, CDEGS, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
AI & Automation Leadership
  • Lead others in using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost‑effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process‑improvement work, for example, automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation while ensuring results are verified.
  • Supervise engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, reviewing automated outputs.
  • Value additional learning such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields.

Compensation Range

$100,019 – $152,807
