Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Chicago seeks a senior transmission line engineer to design lines from 69 kV to 500 kV, perform cost analyses, and develop criteria, routing, and siting. You will lead a small project team and coordinate with vendors and clients while ensuring compliance with industry standards.

The role requires ABET‑accredited engineering credentials, extensive PLS‑CADD experience, and a track record of managing schedules and budgets on diverse transmission projects.

Qualifications

  • Degree from an ABET‑accredited engineering program.
  • Proficiency with PLS‑CADD software, able to review transmission line models.
  • 7 or more years of experience on project teams, managing schedules and budgets on diverse transmission assignments including design, cost estimation, scheduling, procurement, and coordination with construction.
  • Knowledge of right‑of‑way requirements, conductor sags/tensions, transmission line plans and profile drawings, and construction documents.
  • Experience verifying and reviewing design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Experience preparing and supporting engineering calculation documentation.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.

Job description

We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement. You'll spend three days a week in the office, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

Responsibilities
  • Design transmission lines in the 69 kV to 500 kV range.
  • Perform cost analyses and develop design criteria, routing, and siting of transmission lines.
  • Conduct conductor selection studies, shielding, grounding, and induction studies.
  • Work with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
  • Direct a small project team.
Opportunities

  • Collaborate with a diverse client base and interact with the client and other project teams.
  • Occasional travel for site visits and client meetings.
  • Develop proposals and cost estimates for new work.

  • Current or future Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience developing engineering proposals and cost estimates.
  • Experience with scheduling.
  • Proficiency with PLS‑TOWER, SAG10, LPILE, MFAD, ArcGIS, CDEGS, AutoCAD, MicroStation.
AI & Automation Leadership
  • Lead others from problem to solution by implementing data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost‑effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process‑improvement work, including automation of calculations, summarizing technical documents, generating design documentation, and guiding AI tool use while ensuring output verification.
  • Manage engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) for automation tasks, reviewing automated outputs.
  • Encourage additional learning such as certificates or minors in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields to support oversight of AI‑enabled engineering workflows.
